Its a good job we are communicating through the medium of the forum today as I have totally lost my voice this morning! Who do I blame? Well none other than double Gold medal winner the sublime Mr Mo Farah. We were lucky enough to have tickets to the final day of athletics in London last night and it was a night that will live with me forever. It was a joy to watch Eusain Bolt who is already a living legend and also the superb USA Womens relay team who put in a performance of relay running that was as breathtaking as it was enjoyable. But it was Mo who stole the show. I have never in all my life heard a crowd go so wild as that race entered its final lap. As he started it the noise from the crowd would have made AC/DC sound like mere lift music. Every person in that stadium was out of their seat screaming him on, the four of us were roaring him on like he was one of our family! I don't see how he could have failed to win with that sort of support. A performance, an atmosphere, an experience I will never forget and will always be proud to say I was there.
I am also so proud of team GB. Our final medal total including 28 Gold is staggering for a country of our size, by a country mile our best in a hundred years. Coming into the games we thought we may do well but never this. We also thought Australia who are a giant of a sporting nation would be right with us all the way , but somehow this time we entered the sporting stratosphere. I don't think it was what Australia did wrong because they as always put in some superb performances but I think this country's national lottery injection into our sport has had amazing results. As well as Australia I want to send my respects and congratulations to the US who as always are true winners. Whenever I meet Americans they are always friendly, polite and generous. I know I'll never see the Olympics in my country again, but not only am I proud of how well we hosted and performed in the games but we have decided if it ever comes back to Europe or even the US we are going to go again, because an Olympic final night is simply like no other, I really had no idea.
Two final happy points. The authorities did a great job in scaring folk off the underground, because the oft warned chaos and end of the world scenario down there has simply not happened, well done London Underground.
Finally, last night I saw US/Brit/Finland/German/Brazilian fans all drinking, enjoying themselves, standing for each others anthems without a hint of trouble or bad feeling, why is it like this in so many sporting events but not football?
I know Brazil will put on a wonderful Olympics in four years time and I know we in our two families will be glued to it once again!
