Hi All,

I think that I had posted the beginnings of this piece somewhere but can't find the thread. Anyway, I was taking my time to assemble and undercoat this fine kit. I added drilled brass inserts to the drums for strength and finally, I have decided to start painting the kit.

Looking good but worth looking at photos of black horses to get a realistic view of how the eyes look?

Hi Malcolm,

I was being whimsical when I dotted those eyes. I haven't fully painted the horse but well-spotted (ouch!). I will be painting the eyeballs in yellow ochre with black pupils, with minimal white. I intend to give my horse 4 white socks and a blaze.

Hi Victor

I was making a general point as I know you are only at an early stage of the painting and that you take ultimate care on your finished art and your results are brilliant and have a unique style.

Horses are very very hard to do. Lots of castings are excellent but achieving a realistic look on a horses eyes, face, and semi shiny coat is a real challenge. I look forward to see how you tackle it.

Best regards

I found a set of Airfix WWII decals and applied them to the stalhelm, then started to paint the uniform.

Here is an update to this piece. The kettledrums are just inserted (not yet fixed) for this pic.

I finally spent some time to add the reins to this figure. Very fiddly work hence I avoided it for a while.

Finished the lacing around the saddlecloth and have attached the kettledrums.

The delay in painting this was that I was checking for some facts about this kettledrummer.

I found out that the drum sticks were all white. The wehrmacht had all the kettledrum banners for cavalry changed to yellow. The cypher was a KR monogram. There are two known pics of the horses. The SS had an all white horse. This wehrmacht horse was all black with three white socks, the front right foot being all black. The hooves were painted dark for parade. Now proceeding with the final painting.

Hi John,

thanks for your nice comment. I'm still learning to push the paint. The learning curve is steep and agonizing...hahaha.
