Found this forgotten kit and decided to put it together minus the spear handle which I will substitute with a brass tubing. I found a nice picture showing the different legion shield markings, so will use that to pick out a suitable design.

that's cool...
nice reference with those large images...
easy to print out and paste on a shield...

Hi Mike,

that's actually a pretty good idea. Never thot of that. I think that it can be done with special decal sheets.

Because this was a conversion, I had glued the spare shield to the hand. I've just added a simple strip of metal foil to represent a shield strap at the back.

Painted most of the Andrea legionary. gave him a green tunic and painted the shield without wings and lightning bolts. This was taken from Duncan Head's Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome. the shield design probably represents a unit (legion?) operating in Spain.

I remain sceptical of all the itemised and supposed identifcation of roman shield designs etc., especially in colour (!) To date, I am aware of only the few examples from Dura Europos. Basically, they've never advanced further than Peter Connolly's vintage book "Greece and Rome at War".

The other famous ref "Notitia Dignitatum" was drawn a few hundred years from the Byzantine Empire and is not representative of Imperial Rome.

Best guess for this shield design taken from Trajan's column is a unit in the Dacian Wars, Roman or Auxiliary but the design makes a change from the lightning bolts and wings. My Roman theme is gradually expanding.
