This is the Five Nations Gate at Fort Niagara includes a drawbridge. The gate was tied to a wooden palisade and earthen rampart, not a stone wall. French being French. Similar in ways to JJD's St. Louis Gate for the Quebec Series.

The defense of the gate is shown in the second photo - the very small link under the first photo. If you click on the "next up", more photos including garrison artillery and carriages. But note that on some of the pages, there is a smaller link to other photos of the same area, the little "next prev" immediately below the picture. The "tall" cannon mechanisms did not require an embrasure to fire over the rampart.

Below is the link for a virtual tour. There are few buildings you can enter including the powder magazine and the earthworks. You can even look up at the ceiling of the magazine from inside the building by using the mouse to scroll up. Just need to click on the White Arrows when they appear. The other side of the Five Nations Gate can be seen in the virtual tour if you go the earthworks arrow.

There's an interesting photo of an 18 pounder with a wheel turret for rotation of direction...I have never seen that before...

Thanks for posting these interesting links. Last time that I went to the fort was in the '60s, so I was long-overdue for some sort of visit. :D:D When I lived in Buffalo in the '80s, a local TV station set up recording equipment in the Castle in an attempt to "capture" the headless ghost. Alas, nothing came of it, except a conclusion (also reached by others) that the headless ghost story was just that; a story. :(:(
