I quickly knocked up a figure with Preiser parts. To get the pose I wanted, I juxtaposed the pieces. The fun part is when I start to customize this figure.
I have made a long spear for this piece. The Luo were the hoplites of Africa.
The shield was carefully cut and reglued at an angle. The shield enveloped the warrior.
The figure has a distended tummy to indicate some malnutrition. The headdress is being sculpted.
The headdress for this figure consists of six feathers. The feather was made from putty, sculpted over sheet metal with a piece of wire glued to it. The wire was used to insert the feather into the central headdress.
The figure was assembled with the spear and shield.
Thanks for your nice comment. Making your own unique figures is an extremely enjoyable pastime. There is wide latitude in native adornment among the Luo people. What I try to capture here are the key elements - the shield, long spear and feathered headdress. Besides the enormous headdress on my previous Luo warrior riding a cattle, there appears to be a smaller headdress made of cane and covered with black material (feathers?) but festooned with large white ostrich feathers. The feathers are either randomly attached or in a circlet around the headdress. The headdress is usually adorned with additional items such as animal horns, antlers, tusks. The headdress is tied to the head with various straps or ropes.
I have bent the white feathers upwards, and then attach curved tusks to the headdress. The figure was then undercoated in enamels and attach to a base for further detailing.
