Hi all,

I went to that site to try and figure out who these guys are. They appear to be a pioneer unit and/or party members. Pretty nasty lot of guys.

Here two pics - anybody know?

THe unit number on the upper sleave in the shield is 182.

Gideon on wwII day by day in the uniform section under the heer infantry and auxiliary units look under Reichsabeitsdienst. The picture on the bottom seems to be the same uniform. It might give you a start for further info.
good luck , Greg

Also you can go to www.axishistory.com look in the gallery under RAD and there is a picture of a guy holding the same flag as in your picture . You can also find out about the history of this group.:)

Gideon,

If they are indeed a work service unit Reichs Arbeits Dienst (RAD) they may have been military support and logistics/transportation work rather than concentration camp transportation facilitators. The former is more likely than the latter given the sheer volume of war material consumed on the Eastern Front each day:

(The abbreviation 'RAD' also means 'wheel' in German). However, you'd probably need to check out the unit's own history to find out more. Here's some general info:

Hi Guys,

Definately RAD folks wearing the funny looking cap.

Their main mission was engineering/ farm land reclaimation where they helped with harvest. They were mainly doing this sort of civil work and werent involved with the Concentration camps. During the war they also did work with the HEER Engineer units and also built a lot of Anti Air battery positions.

I think they also sent a lot of their men into the Infantry as the war progressed.
