Im sure many of you are Anthony Beevor fans. He is the author of 3 historical books on WWII. Most recently he wrote one on D-Day. I have read his first two, which were about Stalingrad and Berlin, respectively. Both were excellent.

For some reason, this weekend's Wall Street Journal (lifestyle section) listed Mr. Beevor's five favorite FICTION works about WWII. They are:

1) Life and Fate by Vassily Grossman
2) Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
3) Sword of Honor by Evelyn Waugh
4) The Fortunes of War by Olivia Manning
5) The Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littrell

I read Catch-22 many years ago but am not familiar with any of the others or most of the authors.

Regardless, I figured some of you would be interested to know of these books.

Yes,thanks for posting these.I have Belin,Stalingrad and D Day and they are superb, will check out the ones on your list.

Actually this might be a good idea for a thread: historical fiction favorites.

Just off the top of my head, Len Deighton's Mickey Mouse comes to mind as so do the Gunner Asch series (about a German soldier, told from the German side). I believe the same author also wrote the Night of the Generals, good book and excellent movie with Peter O'Toole.

James Holland's Sgt Jack Tanner series, the first two being 'The Odin Mission' and 'Darkest Hour'.Very enjoyable WW2 Historical romps in the same vein as the old 'Commando' and 'Battle picture Libary' comics many of us grew up with.

Good idea J, as you thought of it with good friend Rutledge, suggest you kick-it off!

I'm itching to type 633 Squadron.....:D

Beevor's "Crete: The Battle and the Resistance" is also worth a read.
