I received a notice from Live Auctioneers about an antique toy auction in Germany, run by Ladenburger- Spielzeugauktion GmbH. There are some wonderful old toys here, albeit very expensive!

For example, see this one:

German Description

Here's a link to the auction should you care to look at -- or bid on -- some wonderful old toys.

There are a lot of very interesting toys in that auction. Tin clockwork toys, composition figures, display bases, etc. It'd be interesting to see what they all go for.

It's interesting, too, that the Märklin tin battleship featured on the front page is a German battleship called "Tirpitz" but with the abbreviation "HMS". Probably made for the British market. I suspect that it pre-dates 1920, though.

Prost!

Brad, I thought you would enjoy it.

If I may, Prost!

Perhaps the 'HMS' is a simple typo, as it should read 'SMS', meaning Seiner Majestat Schiff, (His Majesty's Ship).^&confuse -- Al

No, look at the ship. It's got "HMS TIRPITZ" painted on the bow. There is a typo in the catalog, though, where they wrote "HNS" instead of "HMS".

Prost!

I don't think it's an error, I think that was deliberate. I'm just not sure why. I don't think many British parents would have bought their kids a boat named after the man most responsible, after the Kaiser, for the naval arms race. So I don't see that a German toy maker would have produced it, expecting it to sell. But it sure looks like it. It makes it even more of an interesting piece, in any case, given that history. I'd be curious to know more about the piece and its maker.

Prost!
