Hello forum,

Just wondering if there were any other antique toy soldier collectors on this forum. I would love to see how other collectors arrange and display their figures. I know this forum is more geared toward military models and new toy soldiers, but I thought I would ask. Is there another toy soldier forum that deals more with vintage figures, ie. Mignot, Old Britains, Heyde etc?

Attached is a picture of my wall of Mignot in my study.

Cheers

Good to see you back and thank you for posting that wonderful display of Mignot figures.

Hi,

Thanks very much for posting the picture of the custom made wall cabinet with the CBG Mignot figures.

It is not too often that this French maker makes an appearance here.

Regards, Raymond.:)

There are and we are watching you! I like the all. So I have matte and glossy and a few vintage mixed in. The Mignot are very nice but still somewhat expensive for me:(

Hello!

Thanks for responding. You can't really see any detail on the figures in that photo unfortunately. I will try and take some more detailed shots. I had a local carpenter build and mount the case to house my mignots. Now I found I am out of room!!! I have two smaller display cases that house my moderns. I will try to photograph those too.

I know there are tons of vintage collectors out there, they are always out bidding me at auction! In the 90's, Old Britains were all the rage (luckily escaped that addiction). Dedicated Mignot collectors have always been a rarer sort (rather like Francophilia in general in America), but given the price of the figures, I know I must not be alone in my obsession. Maybe we vintage collectors are just not tech savvy enough for forums.

So I guess y'all are stuck with my occasional vintage toy soldier intrusions.

Cheers!

Cole

Yo Trooper carry on posting, it would be nice to see some close ups of your collection, you should put them in your albums so we can view them anytime. I collect mostly Antique-ish models IE: Chas Stadden and Old Britains. As you say we are always getting outbid with some big money on the auctions but you never see these collectors/investors on the forums. Dont know anything about Mignot so lets hear more about them.:D.
Bernard.

Wow, Cole, nice collection of Mignots!

Don't the preponderance of King & Country/First Legion/(insert newer maker's name here) figures chase you away. I think you're right, though many of us focus on newer manufacturers, I think there is interest in the classic makers, as I like to call them, and many of us have representatives of those lines in our collections.

For me, I have the odd single Mignot-CBG pieces or two, and some classic Britains, some Heydes, no sets, though, but mostly things that caught my eye.

But the more varieties of toy soldiers we collect, and the more we show here, the tastier the stew is that is our forum.

About the only thing I haven't really seen here is classic American dimestore figures. I don't think too many of us are quite old enough to have been kids when they were at the height of their availability, though, and certainly, collecting things you remember from your childhood is an influence on collecting habits. But having said that, there's a devoted following in the hobby for dimestores, too, and several collectors who are expert at kitbashing and modifying salvaged dimestore toy soldiers into new ones.

Prost!

Cole,

Good to see you back again here. I think all of us would like to see more of your collection, particularly close ups, so please keep posting.

Cheers,

Brad, the other soldiers that you also rarely see here are composition figures.

I have a modest collection of Lineol and Elastolin figures. If I ever get my computer to download the pics on my camera, I try and post some. My collection is almost all prewar German soldiers. I need to go through them and catalog them all for insurance purposes.

Cole, I agree with the others that you have a very nice collection of Mignots. ;)

Very good point, Chuck, I agree!

Great cabinet but even greater display. I have almost 100 Mignots, some that I bought in NYC over 30 years ago, some when I was in Paris, and some more recently from Le Petit Soldat in St. Louis. The main part of my toy soldier collection consists of Britains & Johillcos. I used to have a fair number of dimestore soldiers, but sold those some years ago. Having enough display cabinets is always a problem. Most of my important toy soldiers are in a large oak china cabinet, circa 1910, while the models are in curios, on bookshelves, or still tucked away. As I don't know how to use digital cameras, and certainly don't know how to transfer digitized photos to other sites, I'll have to wait for my tech-savvy wife to help me to share my collection(s) with the Forum.:D:D

Hello Cole,

I am looking forward to viewing detailed pictures of your Mignot collection.

It would be a real treat as it is not often to see Mignot figures here.

Best, Raymond.:)

Hello out there!
Just signed up...I have a modest collection of vintage American dimestore type Grey Iron, Manoil and Barclay figures. Not really my childhood period(I'm a 1960's boomer), but I love toy history and the world war eras in particular. I ran across a small assortment of vintage and recast Grey Irons at an auction a few years ago..and that started the collecting bug! Otherwise...I am into vintage 1960's era GI Joes.
Would be glad to swap info with any similar collectors out there. Any tips on storage, display, repair and painting would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
"old soldierguy"

Great!
I have an unidentified vintage 1930's German soldier,( kneeling and firing)..that I would love to I.D. It's a 3" scale metal figure, kind of a mint (light)green uniform with brown jack boots. Original paint , it looks like. No marks or numbers of any kind. Anyone out there have any idea on the maker of this?
Thanks,
old soldierguy

Hi and welcome to the forum. There are several of us who have older figures some of mine go back to the 1920s and perhaps a bit older. If you want to make IDing a figure easier you need to post a photo of it and I am sure one of us will be able to help you ID the guy.

Enjoy your time here

Dave

I love to hunt through flea markets and antiques stores looking for old toy soldiers, principally Britains. I keep them on display in plexiglass cases, 6 - 8per case.
