I was just wondering, has there ever been any made in USA "Dimestore" type figures posted at the Forum such as those made by Barclay, Manoil and Grey Iron in the 1930's to 1950's or so? In about 2000 I added some such figures to my small collection (about 2 dozen) of mainly Barclay figures I played with as a boy in the early 1950's. I got mostly Eccles Bros., Ltd reproductions and had about #100 figures at one point as a side bar collection. However, in more recent years I have downsized back to about 3 dozen or so to make display space for King & Country and other such modern post 1970 miniatures.

Not too many. I think age is a real factor; most dimestore collectors are guys who played with them as kids.

Having said that, in the past 10 years, there have been a couple of people working with dimestore figures as their raw material, restoring them, making conversions, or making figures that Barclay and Manoil never made. But still, the fan base seems relatively limited.

Prost!

Dear Brad:

Yes, it would seem that the Tree Frog Treasures Forum is mainly for collectors of post 1970 toy soldier productions and if there are any pre-1970 related productions posted they do not include any old "Dimestore" items.

I have posted threads on Dimestore figures. I will post some pics. I could not get the thread to highlight. Maybe Scott knows how. Thanks John

Thanks Scott. Would I be able to post old threads or is the moderator the only ones that can do this? J

Do you mean post in old threads? or copy the link to another thread? Either way the answer would be yes you can do both.

Thanks to all who took the time to post assorted comments on my Thread about "Dimestore" items at the Forum.

I've got 50+ Barclay soldiers in assorted poses and about a dozen Grey Iron. I'm not a big fan of Manoil's sculpts. You used to be able to find them at "antique" and junk shops all the time, but I guess collectors have picked them clean, because I can't seem to find them anymore during my 'tiquing expeditions.

Dear "ChurchMouse1" / Dave:

Thanks for your reply back as well. Ah, if I knew what I know now I would have purcahsed on yard sales, etc these Barclay, Manoil's & Grey Irons for well less than $1.00 to $1.50 in the say 1960's to early 1970's and then resell them for a big profit in the 1990's to date. Oh well, timing is everything!

I just got the Fall 2010 issue of "Old Toy Soldier", and it contains two articles that would interest dimestore fans. The first is an article on the work that Ed Burley, Bill Holt and Ron Eccles did to produce toy soldiers in the dimestore style for the 1993 movie "Toys", including some excellent photos of the works in progress, and finished. The other is the latest installment in a series by Roger DuBois on converting dimestore figures. In this installment, he converts the Manoil doctor figure to change the lab style coat into the standard officer's wool topcoat, with ilustrations of his tools and techniques.

In fact, if you don't already subscribe to OTS, and you're a fan of dimestores, I recommend subscribing, and picking up back issues as well. There is a lot of content on dimestores in OTS.

Prost!
