I just recently purchased this, but I don't know what it is.

There are no markings at all on the bottom. If it helps, the rider is removable, but there is no peg to hold him on like some manufacturers have. Any help is appreciated
Thanks
Zach

Montcalm? Possibly, though, are the cast details correct? The lace looks more like the lace of an Austrian general officer, though I'll have to look it up to be sure. The saddle blanket and pistol covers should be blue, too, not red.

I'm wondering about the casting. The figure reminds me of one of the mounted officer castings Tommy Atkins has in their Jacobite Rebellion series. The horse looks like a Caton sculpt.

An interesting find!

Well, I've found an image online that helps support the ID as Montcalm:

Good eye, Mark!

I'm still curious about the casting's make.

Looks to me like an ATS (Alexander Toy Soldiers) sculpt....the base is their style.
It might be a custom figure as I have not seen this on their website.

Good call, it may be, though that style of base is common to a number of makers, including Tradition. I've associated it with Caton's horses. He's one of the sculptors whose work is contracted by a number of makers, I think. Though the shape of the base is easy enough to adopt for one's one use.

Well, then, perhaps it is Mr. Caton's work, after all. I had a quick look at the ATS site, and there is a tribute and thank-you to him, right on the front page, for making ATS possible. I couldn't find this specific figure on the site, either, though.

Prost!

I contacted Nik at ATS and it's not one of theirs.
They said maybe it was a tradition figure

The horse might be a Tradition (ie, Caton) casting, but the figure's head doesn't look quite right for Tradition. It looks a little pinched from side to side, to my eye. But it does remind me of Tommy Atkins' mounted officer. As for the body, it appears to have the lace molded on.

Whatever its origin, it's a nice piece to have in your collection, congratulations on the find!

Prost!

The figure is a conversion of a piece made for the BMSS by Alan Caton. The horse is original, made for the Duke of Marlborough, and the figure has been adapted by a modeller at some stage. It was part of a short series of famous commanders and their trumpeters. Trooper

I don't know who sculpted this figure, but I do know it is available from Fusilier Miniatures in their Tommy Atkins section.Go to www.fusilier-miniatures.com and look in the North American French Indian war section where he can be seen painted as an officer of either the La Sarre or De la Reine regiments. He can also be bought as an unpainted kit.Yes the lace is moulded on.I suspect this one was a kit which someone painted(perhaps as Montcalm).I have two of these, one painted as James Wolf as he appeared at Culloden serving on M/G Hawley's staff(in the cavalry of all places).

I do believe the mystery has been solved! Thanks all for your input. I love these mysteries!

Thanks, Tony, I thought this was a Tommy Atkins figure! I didn't look deep enough into the catalog.

Now, Zach, I hope you didn't pay more than the retail price for the painted figure direct from the maker.

Prost!
