I had never heard of this guy until I saw "The Backwoods" where they played a song called "There is a War." A few weeks later I saw a documentary on him. Lots of great songs like "Tower of Song" and Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah"!!!

Yes, I do like Leonard Cohen. He's a Montreal boy and a a pretty active Buddhist. I actually saw him at some university party when he was just a poet.

There's a movie called Pump Up the Volume with Christian Slater and the major song is by Cohen. I think the name of the song is Everybody Knows. The lyrics are so depressing that in some strange way they're refreshing.

Just found it on the net:

Everybody Knows
(co-written by Sharon Robinson)

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows

Believe it or not he's coming all the way to Perth in Western Australia early next month. Performing on the lawn of a vineyard, with one of Australia's best singer/songwriters Paul Kelly (for a good representative Paul Kelly track, look for 'To Her Door') Should be outstanding.

I like him in a "slit your wrists" kind of way.

He's a bit dark but he's got some great songs.

Yeah, I have been a fan for years. He is such a great song writer and he has such a distinctive voice. Every once and a while there is a showing of a movie he made in 2005 on one of the movie channels. It was call Leonard Cohen - I'm your man Here is a link http://www.leonardcohenimyourman.com/

Lots of history about him and several old videos of him performing. Great stuff. His song "The Future" was the feature song on the Woody Harrelson movie Natural Born Killers.:cool:

Leonard Cohen is a far greater songwriter than Bob Dylan. When I went to Montreal I was so excited because I was going to see "Our Lady of the Harbor" The tour guide had never heard of him. I mean really.

I listened to him a little bit back in the late 60s. Not exactly my style but still glad that he's around.

Here's a link to his All Music Guide biography.

This made me laugh and wonder all at the same time. I'm still wondering.

Most big cities have a story. Montreal's story is one of two solitudes (French & English). Many in one culture have no clue what goes on in the other. It goes both ways. And so was your guide a francophone Damian? (Anglophone & francophone are common usage in Montreal.

He's a bit on the dark side of music. For me, listening to LC is a pretty gloomy experience so I have to be in the right mind set.

I like that song "the future" but it is really bleak. Something about his voice and the cadence of the music is dark and murky to me. Maybe I just haven't heard enough of it.

I'm NOT suicidal so no need to wonder about that.
