the 1941 campaign in the Philippines? Looking for something comprehensive, but readable. Not a review of the entire Pacific War.

Try "Bataan: Our Last Ditch" by John Whitman, published by Hippocrene in 1990. For the air war try "Doomed at the Start" by William Bartsch, published by Texas A&M Univ. in 1992. Both outstanding histories and good reads. -- Al

"Doomed at the Start" is an excellent book, I can recommend it. I think I posted a brief review of it over in the "What Are the Forum Members Reading?" thread.

If you do read it, have some Post-Its handy. I found it necessary to mark the locations of the maps and diagrams in the book, to be able to refer back to them quickly as I progressed through the text and came upon new mentions of the locations.

I was surprised to realize that the last US troops surrendered almost just before the Battle of Midway.

Prost!
