Hi

been itching to convert this set for a while - its the AIP Union Iron Brigade set ACW into British Grenadier Guards in Greatcoats Crimean War 1854-56.

The bearskins are off Deetail figures and I have used modelling putty to fashion a shoulder cape addition to the greatcoats.

The greatcoat was longer as standard regulations at the time coming well below the knees, but I remember hearing or reading somewhere that they were cut shorter to aid movement in the trenches so based upon this I thought ok to proceed. On the next set I think I will have a crack at lengthening the greatcoat with modelling putty for those troops whom adhered to regulations.

These look great! Your conversion work is outstanding and has definitely given me a few ideas for my AIP sets that still need to be painted. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers,

Hi Brendan,

Glad that you like them and they were enjoyable and didn't take that long to make - I did a similar job with AIP Berdan Sharpshooters giving them Albert style shakos to be transformed into Crimean War British Line Infantry in greatcoats.

In my opinion, the best Crimean war plastic figure conversions that I have seen are by Eric Kemp of Helmet Soldiers. He has a long line of British Guardsmen photographed on his blog all in the red coatee and he made the coat tails out of modelling clay. Most were ACW donor figures utilising the Deetail bearskin and lots of different poses. Now there is a thought - how about Scots Greys at the Charge of the Heavy Brigade - the Deetail bearskin would do nicely - need to get innovative!

Be sure to show your figures on here.

Regards
Dave

I think that the plastics makers are concentrating on those white on brown colonial wars and squeezing the last penny out of WW II , the Alamo, and the American Civil War. I can't blame them because those eras are where the money is. AIP did release The Light Brigade series but nobody to fight them.
