Hi

I read elsewhere on the net that AIP are looking at releasing WW1 Infantry in gas masks plus 1914 French Inf in kepis and British Inf in field service caps.

The French in red kepis and trousers from the opening stages of 1914 would be my favourite subject.

Any more details out there?

Dave

the british in service caps would be good for early ww1 up to to 1917

That report was completely false. The site that stated it is notorious for giving out wrong information. Nothing world war I related from AIP is coming anytime soon. Perhaps next year at the earliest.

Hi

in that case I think its out with the modelling skills and I am going to finally shave off those haverlocks on the AIP French Foreign Legionnaires set and turn them into the French of Aug 1914. Might do the same with the British if I can.

Hi
In the interim I managed to convert the French Foreign Legion set into French in red kepis depicted from the start of the Great War in August 1914

And a very fine job too. When this option is there, why do people want another set without the neckcloths? I'd much rather have a set which can't be created by simple conversion like this - eg the Boxer Uprising Italians...though now I've said that, someone is going to post how they have made them for US marines or something, I just know it! ;)

Hi Mike

yes good points, but converting may not be to everyone's requirements I suppose - some just want to paint the figures straight out of the box.

I have been asked to do a conversion with this same set into the Belgian Infantry Aug 1914 - the cut of uniform was similar, but they had a different ammo pouch (large one at the front) plus a German style entrenching tool and water bottle and the headgear did vary depending on the regiment. I have been shown period photos and I like the Grenadier regiment in particular, however they did leave their bearskins in the barracks at Brussels as they were deemed too warm and cumbersome for battle and wore a field cap instead.

The Belgian army of Aug 1914 was very Napoleonic in certain aspects with Lancers and Guides and Light Dragoons cavalry, Line infantry in shakos, Grenadiers in bearskins, Chasseurs in round hats and reserve militia infantry in bowler style hats. They also used large dogs to pull the machine guns on carts.

Point taken but I don't think those who ask for sets like this appreciate the economics of the business side of the hobby. Makers are looking to sell a maximum number of each set from the same moulds, hence the AIP approach of multiple colours of the same sets. A set which covers virtually the same ground is not going to sell well, and neither are ones which are self-limiting, like Scots Greys!

Belgians - yes, fascinating at the start of WWI, as you say almost Napoleonic. ScaleLink do the machinegun dogcart (in metal of course) and I have always fancied one. Belgium also prepared (thought it was not sent) an Expeditionary Force for the 1900 Boxer Uprising wearing uniforms very close to those of WWI, so at least some of the figures would be good for a 'What-if?'... um, now you have got me thinking!

Hi Mike

I bet you could model and paint some super Belgians Aug 1914 using stock AIP figures. I am going to have a crack at some and will post on here when done for comment.

I am fascinated by the Battle of Haelen - known as the battle of the silver helmets in 1914 when the Belgian cavalry halted a forward group of German cavalry.

I may use Britains Deetail ACW troopers as a basis for the Belgian cavalry as they have the short jacket in common.

But don't the have trousers down over their boots? - would Deetail 7th Cav be better - they are IMHO better figures. I did a couple of early WWI French Cuirassiers from them, to go with a WB metal one I'd been given, for a game. But then they have rolled sleeves - so they have to be removed, which is no easier than trimming trousers to boots I guess.

Looking forward to seeing how yours turn out.

Mike
