I see this thread has disappeared. This should not be.I understand this forum is not about politics but this is history. Most of us became interested in collecting because of our interest in history and to take the thread off is wrong. We can't pretend this event did not happen.I saw no one getting out of line on the thread.

Agreed 1000%; sometimes, we need a place to come and vent/grieve/express anger and sorrow/over world events.

Lighten up on the trigger finger when it comes to zapping threads; go ahead and delete political bull, but leave the thread up.

I just DVR'd the "Friendly" soccer match on Tuesday, France vs England..............when the French National Anthem is played, I'll do my best to keep my **** together, but no promises, it is going to be must see TV....................Sports has a way of bringing people together as well as causing intense rivalries, which is one of the side benefits.......................

In my view, the thread got out of control, from what it should be, commiseration for the people of Paris, into some very strong political areas.

This is supposed to be a non-political forum and the rules clearly state that.

Yesterday in Paris, all the museums, parks, public places, most of the shops, cafes, restaurants were closed, first time I see this. The tourists must have been bored.

I've been to Paris several times and love to walk around but yesterday I guess I would have stayed put. On Sundays I've gone to the market at Raspail but I'm sure it wasn't there yesterday, assuming it's still around.

Yes,yesterday I wanted to buy some vegetables , but I noticed that also the open market near my place was closed.Only the supermarkets were open.

As a member of this forum since day one I too would like to hear comments from members throughout the world. After all these years I get really tired of the same post, "great diorama", "great figure", same old post all the time. Even tho I have not personally met a lot of members I still consider them friends and want to hear what they say, whether I agree or not.

I sometimes wonder if the media should limit their coverage of these events. I understand why they are important but covering them nonstop for weeks on end is just one of the motivations of the nuts who carry them out. They want to promote fear and panic. And the media does that for them. They should also stop reporting the identity of the mass shooters here in the US instead of running those stories continuously. There seems to be a death and fear fixation that is insatiable for these stories. People are afraid of their own shadows. There is less chance of dying in a terrorist attack than being struck by lightning. There was stampede of hundreds of people in Pars yesterday for no reason. It gives the perpetrators a platform for whatever cause that motivates them and inspires others. Of course that will never happen because TV ratings are enormous but it is a vicious cycle. Back when the network news was on for 30 minutes a day the public got maybe ten minutes on this type of story each day. Now it is all day long for weeks.

I was visiting my 90 year old mother this past weekend and she commented on what a terrible world we live in today. I reminded her that 70 million people were killed during WWII and the Great Depression of 1929 lasted almost 10 years with close to 30% unemployment and hundreds of thousands of bankruptcies at its peak.
Her response was that she watches too much TV (CNN) and there is too much news nowadays which makes her crazy!
You would hope that better informed people would take more responsibility and make better decisions.......don't know that is true, however.

I was happy that President Obama in his news conference after the G20 meeting in turkey said "that all Muslims must work harder and get more involved in stopping the hate of Westerners and Christians........and fighting extremism". America and Western Europe can' t do it alone.

Sorry if this was too political.

With the advent of cable news and the Internet every terrible thing in the world becomes known to us almost in real time. As a result people become fearful or perceive the world to be a more dangerous place than it is. Some politicians and media types benefit from that false perception. If you did nothing other than watch the cable news networks and even local news you would never leave the house. Absent the election coverage, it's a drumbeat of fear and mayhem. Even the weather reports of every pending snowstorm have an apocalyptic feel. You would never have a clue that the violent crime rate in the US has actually dropped significantly in the last few decades and most people are much safer than ever before.

The scariest thing on the internet is all this conspiracy theories. It makes crazy people more crazy.

Those are part of CIA, illuminati free mason black psy ops.
If you fold a dollar bill in three equal parts and hold it up to the light on the summer solstice you can clearly see it.

I think as a society we need to boycott the 24 hour news cycle outlets. Only if we change our behaviors will they change.

A lot of studies show that news is bad for your physical and mental health (literally, not figuratively.)

I won't open my FB page for days to let all the crap fade away.

You're assuming that someone listens to what he says.
Sorry if this was too pragmatic.

I totally agree. Being bilingual French/English (I was born and lived half of my life in France - including 10 years in Paris in the district of the Bataclan theatre - and half in the US), I do see a difference between the French coverage of these tragic events (I watch French TV5 and read French online news) and the American one and especially the CNN version of it. The former is covering the why and how we got there and what could be the solution of the root cause by bringing to the table real experts for example in Muslim society/religion including French Muslims, etc. so you get an in-depth analysis of these events while the CNN one is not about how we got there but focusing only on the sensational and graphic part of these events. The French media also don't talk too much about the terrorists but more about the people they killed. Sensational sells while normalcy doesn't in the world of today. Unfortunately I do see that model of coverage reaching Europe more and more (e.g. SkyNews).

CNN was playing tapes from ISIS yesterday encouraging muslims in the US to rise up and commit violent acts. You have to wonder at the decision to air those tapes if not to promote fear and gain ratings. The media bears a lot of responsibility for promoting these events by giving them so much attention. I do understand that they are news, but the dwelling on this endlessly is unhealthy. It would be great if all news media voluntarily agreed not to state the name or show the picture of any mass shooter so long as that person was dead and not a threat to public safety. Let them go to the grave in obscurity.

Such tapes need to go to our intelligence services, not the public. All this public airing accomplishes is exactly what the terrorists want, publicity for their warped views, intimidation, and a type of immortality. Let our protective services have the info, keep it to themselves, use it to track the terrorists, and exterminate them like the vermin they are. -- Al
