Germany declares war on France and Germany invades Belgium.

King Albert gives order to blow up bridges and other crossing points. In response to a German request to pass through Belgium in order to invade France, as part of Germany's Von Schlieffen Plan, King Albert had said "Our answer must be no, whatever the consequences."

The Germans invade Belgium and around the 5th start to square off against Belgian forces near Liege. Eventually, they invade the city and penetrate the ring of forts surrounding the city. It falls on the 6th.

In the buildup, troops were crossing the Rhine daily.

In order to delay the German invasion, the Belgians destroyed railways. Thousands of German railway workers were needed to repair the lines.
