When I and many Americans think of Australian rock we think of one band,AC/DC.I've been surfing around Youtube listening to old songs I haven't heard in a long time and when you do this you come along groups you've forgotten about or never heard of before.I've come across a couple of bands from Australia that I think were really good,Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs and Coloured Balls.Ive been listening to some of their Sunbury Festivals recordings and really like them, especially Billy Thorpe's version of CC Rider which I think is the best version I've ever heard IMO.The quality of the youtube recordings leave something to be desires but I like these nevertheless. There is a Best of Billy Thorpe at Sunbury CD but Amazon is out right now but I think I'm going to get it.Do any of our Australian members remember these groups and liked them?Weren't the Sunbury Festivals suppose to be a Australian Woodstock?

Marco,
Mate you show great taste in liking Billy Thorpe, I grow up with the AZTECS, many a late night returning home with ringing ears and tapping feet from a Aztec concert, just brilliant raw and very loud rock and roll. Sadly Billy is no longer with us and he and the band are true rock music legends here in OZ. Yes Sunbury was our version of woodstock, I wasn't able to get there in those days and wish I could have. I attached some pics of album covers and etc that I hope you will find of interest, nothing will ever beat the AZTECS live in full flight...keep rocking.
Wayne.

Mark mate,
Billy Thorpe (RIP) and the Aztecs were the greatest band of my youth. Yes, Sunbury which about 10 Km west of Donnybrook was the site of the Subury Pop Festivals. It was held over a three day long weekend and I think I still have my 1972 T-Shirt. A great weekend of wine, women and song. 1972 was the last one and yes it was Australia's answer to Woodstock. Memories.:smile2:
Cheers Howard

Thanks guys I thought some of you were around my age.^&grin I have been reading up on Thorpe and it seems he did different styles of music over his long career.I think he played the kind of music I like from 1968-75.I do remember hearing his Children of the Sun years ago.Looking at some of the clips on youtube it looked like a great time at Sunbury (especially with all the pretty girls^&grin:wink2:).Howard I hope those memories I rekindled made you smile.

Mark mate,
You certainly did bring back some great memories. Sitting here now listening to The Best of Thorpie belt out in the background. Outstanding. 1968-75 some fantastic and tragic times. Nam, Army, Pop Festivals, Marriage, First Child, etc.
It is also funny how you mentioned about AC/DC. In 2010 when my daughter and I rocked into the Hotel in Irvine, LA for the West Coaster TS Show she was wearing an AC/DC T-Shirt and the guys behind the reception desk could not stop asking her question. I was nearly tempted to ask for a room upgrade.^&grin^&grin
She also got an offer to buy that same T-Shirt when we moved onto NY for young Louis' Symposium.
Cheers Howard

Ah yes AC/DC is Australian rock over here and don't get me wrong as I love AC/DC but it was nice learning about other groups.Just got done reading about a fight between Deep Purple's and AC/DC roadies at the last Sunbury and AC/DC ended up not playing which was a shame.

Thanks Wayne.First listened to this one last night.Hope others will listen to his music.

Thanks fellas for putting the videos up.A lot of talent in Australia but mostly unknown by the majority of people here in the states.By seeing all the Australian actors and actress on TV and in the movies these days it looks like Hollywood has reconigized all the talent down there. Now if only the music companies would too.

Yes I've read about that too, also read quite a bit about the late great Bon Scott, who by all accounts knew how to look after himself, must have been some brawl on stage between that lot.

''Only the good die young'' well don't know if that applies to Bon but he is a legend, even has a statue at Fishermans Wharf in Freemantle W.A.....

Legend indeed. No disrespect to Brian Johnston intended at all, but they were never the same band after Bon died. He WAS the spirit of that band. Funny though, I read somewhere that one author or another believed the band were on the verge of sacking Bon just before he died.

What I really liked about Bon Scott was that he was the real deal, what you see is what you get and no airs and graces, a true rock n roller. He didn't have the stage magnetism or writing skills of Jagger and he certainly didn't have a voice anywhere near as good as Freddie Mercury, but he was a still a brilliant front man and born to live that way. R.I P.

I also concur that AC/DC wasn't the same after Bon died.

Anybody heard of The Reubens?I heard a song called "I'll Surely Die" on Supernatural.Checked out some of their other songs on You Tube and they are pretty good.I heard they are from Australia.
