Hi all,

I thought it over for awhile and realized that my true love of this hobby started with a Marx Battleground play set so why not honor that memory with a nice display in my soldier room of just that, a full diorama of the play set in action, I have an extra shelf I can use below a First Legion dio and it will fit perfectly, not to big but enough to show off the playground and all its glory!!! tricky part is I want to find one like the one I had as a child, the dark grey Germans vs. the neutral green U.S. troops, I can either piece meal the play set for the pieces/color I want off Ebay or see if I can find one in full with box off Ebay, either way I look forward to dusting off the memories of some fierce battles and adding a new chapter to a classic oldie...Sammy

Great idea Sammy! When I was a kid, I would drool over the Sears & Montgomery Ward Christmas catalogs over those Marx playsets. I never got one, but had to trade with the neighborhood kids with my 7th cavalry and my 1/72 soldiers. I remember gray Germans, yellow and dark blue Americans, blue French and creme British. The green Americans must be a later set. Hey, anybody out there have any Auburn soldiers? I might be interested in buying those.

I look forward to it, once I get her up and running I'll certainly post some photos, I believe I got my Play set in 73-74?? I did a little trading as well with a kid in my class, gave him matchbox cars for play set soldiers!!! ah the good ol days :)...Sammy

When you come to Chicago this year, you'll be able to find that set for peanuts, the Marx market isn't what it used to be, the old supply vs demand, not to mention they produced about 2 billion Battleground sets back in the day, so again, the the aftermarket supply far outweighs the demand...................

Thanks George for the info, I have been looking on Ebay for the whole set but very pricey, do you think a collector will have the play set at the show in Sept??...Sammy

You will find that set in many of the rooms. I have seen it in many rooms. I too had the Sears Heritage Playsets (Civil War and Sons of Liberty.) My brother had the Alamo , WWII and Fort Apache sets I am often tempted to pick them up at the show.

Is it the black battleground box number 4202 or 4756? The 4202 had light gray Germans while the 4756 had dark gray. I might be able to help you out. Contact me at beatlesmarxeddie@yahoo.com with details of what you are looking for and your budget.

Good luck on your hunt !

Knowing this somewhat dates me, my first playset was the Marx Battleground set #4752.
Although no 'opponents' (except for colour) the figures were well made and great detail.
Received in 1958...still have 'most' of it...one of my favourites.

I could only wish I had my original, think I received mine for Xmas of 73, 74??? sadly it got tossed in a house move after I had moved out years before :mad: I thought it was safe in a storage foot locker but my cousins who were there doing the moving thought "why would he want a bunch of ol soldiers he played with as a child??" and tossed the lot into the dumpster, that hurts me to even type:(:(. never let it out of your sight Ivan, you're one lucky guy to have your original, I certainly envy you there...Sammy

You'll see plenty of them at the show, shop around and find the best one as you'll have a lot of choices.............
