Hi All,

I've actually had this piece on the shelf for about 30 years. It shows a pantomime dancer frolicking in the abundant rice fields in Bali.
I thought it was time to redo the base. I came across a nice picture of a typical shrine in a rice field and thought that this would greatly enhance the piece.

As I had built up a small collection of different scale bricks, I used this for the shrine. I also used some plastic card and tubing for the model. The shrine is wonderfully rickety as these things were not built to last. Since the shrine is near completion, I am confident I can finish this piece and am posting a thread here.

You should visit Vic's site and have a look at the rest of his figures.

Prost!

Hello Miles and Brad,

Thanks for looking and your kind comments.

I lowered the height of the shrine and changed the shape of the thatch roof.

Not sure if you have seen these pics before but here are a couple more of Balinese dancers. A Tjondong dancer and a Kebyar Duduk dancer.

Hello Brad,

Thanks again for your generous comments. Made me feel guilty about the "grungy look" comment...:), but I'll get over it....:).
The cloth was actually soft metal sheet which was painted and then carefully draped to look like cloth. I used authentic batik patterns taken from my various books.

Hi Miles,

You are very lucky to be living and working in Bali. Sure we can meet when you are over in Spore. I'll PM you my contact.

Using some leftover putty from the elephant, I slapped some on the roof. We have a very long weekend coming (4 days!) and I can use that time to sculpt more things.

I prised away the frog dancer from its base, and rebuilt the base to include the shrine. Here is a posed photo of the piece.

It's been awhile since I last worked on this piece but confinement gives you focus....:)
I decided to redo the shrine. The height was lowered.

Here is the shrine restored to its base.

I've started to rebuild the thatched roof.

I attach the structure to the base. Then I planted a couple of saplings and used bamboo struts to stabilise the shrine. This was apparently done as Bali is an active volcanic area. The ground was painted in very dark soil and I planted long grass into the ground.

I've completed the piece to this stage. Almost done. Foliage fully added barring some minor touch-up. The white stuff is white glue still drying..:):)

Bali is a wonderfully rustic place and this piece captures the tranquil ambience of the padi fields in the morning.

Hope you like it.
