Today, June 4, is the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Midway in 1942. I think this was a turning point in battles with the Japanese Navy. Four Japanese carriers sunk and one American carrier lost in the battle. The US carriers Enterprise, Yorktown and Hornet went against the Akagi, Kaga. Soruyu and Hiryu which were first line Japanese carriers. I still like the movie Midway and watch it several times a year. D-Day gets more publicity then the Midway battle which was fought two years earlier. Today, Midway Island is a wildlife refuge. Leadmen

Midway - was the most important battle in the Pacific - it was the turning point for American to WIN the War. My hat is off to all who fought and died in that great struggle.

Really?? I didn't know that. One of the things that just burns me up and I mean gets me really fired up is the lack of balance in respect to the WW2 theaters. I was born in Okinawa back in 72- my Dad was stationed there and he and mom were living on the island. I was born when he was stationed there.

Anyway, countless times I have gone as an adult to apply for various licenses, permits, etc and when I tell people I was born in Okinawa, they look at me like I am from Mars- heck at least they would know where Mars is!!! Most people anymore don't have a clue about Okinawa, Midway, Bataan, Corregidor, etc- and it makes me really disappointed.

But yeah- 65 years later we should all still remember the sacrifices made by the Corps!!

Okinawa ? My Dad was staioned there during WWII - as a matter of fact he had an Oil Painting done of him in his uniform back in the late '40's there - I have it in our living room.

Wow!! That is quite a treasured item I am sure. Yeah, I always get a few comments on that one. I was born at Camp Kue. Not sure if that place even exists anymore. My parents tell me that the Okinawans just loved me. They really liked the people but said it was unGodly hot and humid there.

I never made to there myself.

But, if its like anything else in Asia - the Summers are the worst.

I spent 15 months on Okinawa has a home base for the 3rd Marine Div. I was there in the early 60's. We were gone on operations most of the time to other Pacific locations. I liked to volunteer to be attached to units going out. I did not like sitting on the "Rock" (Okinawa). We had a pretty good typhoon and rainy season. I remember water flowing through the front and rear doors of the Quonset huts during a typhoon. Okinawa being sub-tropical could get cold at times. I did not look for war artifacts due to the deadly blue coral snakes. Also, they warned of live munitions. I really had a good time there and a few good experiences as well has bad ones. When you are 18 you do stupid stuff but when I consider it I am still doing stupid stuff at 65. ;) Leadmen

Leadmen, Thank You for your service, and I'm glad you made it back. God Bless, Mike:)

When I think of the Battle of Midway, I think of those brave torpedo bomber pilots who heroically sacrificed themselves futily trying to torpedo the Japanese Carriers, drawing down the fighter umbrella, and the heroic Dive Bomber pilots who took advantage of the collapse of the fighter screen to take out those Japanese Carriers. The loss of those carriers, and more importantly, the hundreds of experieced Japanese pilots who had no place to return and land, won the Pacific war for us.
