Hey guys,

For those of you who are familiar with the Pittsburgh area, where exactly is the site of the ambush on Braddock? I know from reading it was a few miles below Fort Duquesne. I was looking at Google Maps and was trying to get an idea of where the battle went down. Was it along Braddock Avenue by chance? Is the site where Braddock crossed over the Monongahela for the last 7 mile march to the fort known?

I hope to post some pics of my Monongahela display late this coming week.

Thanks,

Darrell

According to Osprey Campaign 140 the site of the battle was totally built over with heavy industry in what became the town of Braddock in the later 19th and early 20th C. On the South shore is now the Kennywood Amusement Park where Burton tried to rally the fleeing soldiers. Across the river is a large US Steel Plant which has been built over much of the battlefield. This is according to the book.

If you don't have the book, get it, it is very interesting. Campaign 140 Monongahela 1754-55, Washington's defeat, Braddock's disaster.

Thank you guys for the information. I got on Google maps and checked out the satellite images of the area. I was actually trying to determine the first point of contact via the satellite images. I just couldn't find the apartment building when I was looking. I don't know what street that building is on.

Thanks a lot!

Here these maps may help to layout the battle:

Also try using the bird’s eye view on this map sight. I use it all the time for this type of stuff. http://maps.live.com/

Thank you Bryan. I wasn't able to get the first two links to work, but through the third link you provided I was able to find on the map where the first contact occurred in the battle. It happened between the railroad track and the corner of 6th Street and Baldridge Avenue. You can see the large apartment complex on the corner.

Thanks again,

Darrell

WOW - Guys ! Very interesting stuff - I certainly appreciate all the information. As you know - I collect the BM Range of Jenkins and its great to see the current battlefield.

I will have to make a visit the next time I am in the Pittsburgh, PA !

I was just able to buy a book on this battle titled "Braddock at the Monongahela" by Paul E. Kopperman on eBay. It is the hard cover edition and I only paid $19 for it. I have heard it is an excellent read on the battle. Has anyone else here read it?

By the way, for you guys that are able to post images on the forum in the little thumbnail pictures, how in the world do you do that?

Thanks,

Darrell

As noted, there really is nothing of Braddock's field left to be seen. Just an ugly industrial complex. If you are in western PA, there are some great French-Indian sites including Fort Necessity and Fort Ligonier. I really recommend Ligonier: http://www.fortligonier.org/ They are only a couple hours out of DC.

You can also visit the Bushy Run battlefield outside of Pittsburgh.

Yes, there is not much left to see. The town of Braddock is also very depressed. I would recommend this trip only for the hardcore. If you do find yourself drawn to see where the battle happened I recommend that you find a place to pull over on the opposite bank of the Monongahela. You can then look down into the town and use the topology to trace out where the battle happened. The Carnegie Library in the town has some artifacts from the battle on display. I recommend making an appointment ahead of time. Also I recommend visiting the Fort Pitt museum in Pittsburg. The museum is newly remodeled and has lots of information on the Indian wars.
