I just finished up two excellent books on the American Civil War that I recommend. They both revolve around the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, Virginia. My wife had 13 relatives who fought in the battle that day. Four of them in the 17th South Carolina Infantry and nine of them in the 18th South Carolina Infantry Regiment.
Remembering the Battle of the Crater – War as Murder by Kevin M. Levin which some of you will know from the Civil War Memory Blog.
Also, I read Richard Slotkin’s book, No Quarter – The Battle of the Crater, 1864.
One of the things I read about in each book that made an impression on me was the slaughter of some of the black Federal troops. Just fascinating to read about this horrible tragedy. Even some of the Federal troops killed their own black soldiers in fear of being captured with blacks among them. I highly recommend both books.
