This book recently came to my attention. Being a life-long resident of Nebraska I had to grab it and read the book. One doesn't associate Nebraska with military adventure, but one might be wrong! Obviously the battles involved are involving the native American population; versus the Spanish, versus each other, and versus the white expansion. There are a surprisingly large number of actions listed, from full military battles, through Indian raids, to skirmishes, to ranchers versus a small war party.

Why the recommendadtion on this site? Reading through this book gave me about a dozen ideas for displaying "toy soldier" figures. Many of the battles in Nebraska were relatively small, so one could do justice to some of them with a shelf display. One could use the K&C "real West" series (the 2nd Dragoons DID serve in Nebraska and fought here) or TSSD Cavalry figures (the ACW figures would work well for the uprisings that started in 1864), Paragon, etc. Nebraska saw actions by and against the Commanches, the Cheyenne, the Pawnees, the Omahas and mostly the Sioux nation. There are several period forts still existing in Nebraska that have been preserved or restored.

Even if you don't want to use the book as inspiration for toy soldiers, it is an easy read and not very expensive.
