Hi Randy,

As you probably know, I am a huge fan of Beau Geste figures. Your photograph really brings to life these remarkable figures. Thanks for posting such a great picture! I enjoy it very much!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

That is a very nice set of figures and a beautiful photo.
Good work, Randy, and always a pleasure to see you experimenting with camera and backdrops.
Happy Collecting!

Konrad says I have "tropical helmet" disease:D I don't believe there is a known cure:)

Here's a useful link. It even has a link to a forum on the Colonial German military in WWI.

I can sympathize with your affliction. I believe I have a mild case of it myself, and symptom severity is heavily influenced by TS manufacturers new product lines. We might have a rough year ahead.

Film and an Osprey guide

Black and White in Color DVD
Winner of the 1976 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Black and White in Color is a voracious and timely satire on racism, colonialism, and war. Set in the Ivory Coast during the First World War, a group of bungling French colonials learns that their country is at war with Germany. Spurred on by a capricious moment of patriotism, the Frenchmen decide to attack their German neighbors. In French with English subtitles.

Thanks for the great links, Randy. That website is loaded with fascinating stuff. I feel I must learn more about this subject. One curious thing I've found is that a fairly contemporary looking paperback, "The Battle of Tanga", by a Ross Anderson is selling used in excess of $120-200 USD from all of the usual sources. Darn!

Might have to check out the Osprey title, the Byron Farwell book, or the Hew Strachan book instead.

That film looks like something I need to slip onto the top of my wifes Netflix list. I love seeing the look on her face when she opens up my "surprise" picks from Netflix.

German Colonial Troops in East Africa WWI

Below the photo are the 3 Askari sets made by Beau Geste
I'm intrigued by the zebra transport for the officer. Anyone know about this use of these animals?

The officer riding on a Zebra is a nice touch. Maybe he was lucky and got one of the few that actually could be trained.
I found this on wikipida

"Attempts have been made to train zebras for riding since they have better resistance than horses to African diseases. However most of these attempts failed, due to the zebra's more unpredictable nature and tendency to panic under stress. For this reason, zebra-mules or zebroids (crosses between any species of zebra and a horse, pony, donkey or ***) are preferred over pure-bred zebras."

I see this one roam your cabinets in the future, Randy :D

Thank you Joe and Konrad. I am having fun playing and you are right I do need some askari for my cabinat:)

"By the Shores of Lake Tanganyika"

While native fisherman bring their day's catch to shore, members of the German Colonial Navy in East Africa during World War I prepare to take down the German Imperial flag.
