Does anybody know if it is appropriate to have asphalt (black top) streets for my Berlin LAH dio that I am working on? I've been looking at pics of the Nazi parades, but still cant tell if its asphalt or cobblestone.

Hi GJB22

It would be more appropiate to go cobble.

The main streets in Nurembourg are cobble with slab track areas and the squares are cobble.

Hi there

I dare say Tony is right about the cobblestone over the asphalt, certainly in Nuremberg, however, I have mine displayed on the street bases supplied by JG miniatures - the 9 inch base board comprising tarmac road and flagged pavement for the facades - and they look **** fine IMHO.

Interesting to note as well, of course, the nickname the LAH were given in the early days - 'asphalt soldiers'. The road outside the Turkish embassy in Berlin was certainly asphalt - or tarmac - and a photo in one of the Osprey books on the Waffen SS, showing a march past of the LAH outside the Reich Chancellery in 1938, suggests that the road there was also asphalt rather than cobblestone.

Hope this helps

I am just going to paint a shelf grey the color of the LAH bases and hope for the best. Dept.56 has cobblestone roadway that is not tp expensive. A roll of it was 10 bucks.

Thanks guys, sounds like cobblestone or asphalt will do fine. I decided to order sheets of foam asphalt from woodland scenics(suggested by my dad who's a model train guy). I figured I'd use this to change things up since I went with kancali brick road for my fall of berlin dio I just finished. I'll use the foam for the road and masonite for the sidewalk, which worked really well in my last dio.

Guys

Interesting this thread had me thinking.

I distinctly remember walking around Nuremberg on cobble and the roads being flagged around the track areas etc etc.

I have done some looking into this and this is what i have found!!

Hitler had the roads leading to anywhere that he went in the city, show grounds, etc Asphalted to make his ride smoother! He had the cobbles covered over!

The cobbles have been cleared of the asphalt post war to return the area back to the Medieval city that it was!

so i knew i was not going mad when i followed the route from the town center out to the grounds on a city walk around! and it was all cobbled!

But historically correct to go with Asphalt. from 1935 - 1945/6

Tony
