I was wondering what you thought of the many different smaller German states that fielded corps and contingents in the Grande Armee. My overall impression is that most fought well at some point in their history under Napoleon. But does anyone think that any one contingent stood out, like the KGL did under the English ?

If I had to chose one, I would say its close between the Bavarians and Saxons. But the Saxons win out.

I think it probably varied by unit, campaign, and time period. The Bavarians were probably more pro-French than the other German states. I don't believe that any of the German states allied to France participated in any significant manner in the Prussian War of 1806. I'll have to look into Wagram/Friedland in closer detail before making any judgement. The book NAPOLEONS CONQUEST OF PRUSSIA 1806 by Loraine Petre has a decent summation of the german landscape up to the outbreak of war. Do you know of any book that covers the particulers of French allied German units?
