The Starwars vs Star Trek thread got me thinking that we could use a best Sci Fi series and perhaps a poll. The poll shows some of mine in alphabetical order and, by the forum options, is limited to 20 choices. Note that the poll offers multiple choices. So pick your favorites and post your reasons mates.

That's a tough one, because there are or have been some really good ones, and many from the other side of the pond:

Doctor Who
Star Trek

The Star Trek revivals and spin-offs (eg, ST:TNG, Babylon 5, Enterprise
Space: 1999
UFO
The Thunderbirds
Captain Scarlet
Primeval
Battlestar Galactica
(though I prefer the original, dated as it may be. Cyclons should be identifiable as robots, and Baltar should be clearly evil. John Colicos was much better, as was the original character)
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (Spandex at its best!)

I guess we could include the whole Stargate franchise, though personally, I preferred the movie, and don't really care to see the concept carried to a series.

And how about the only horror soap opera, Dark Shadows? That could probably be included in a poll, too.

Maybe include some anime, too? The Ghost in the Shell series is really very good, both for its scripts and storyline, and its animation.

Prost!

And for the kid in us, we could include Ultraman, Space Giants and Johnny Socko and his Flying Robot.

Ha, sorry, Spitfrnd, when I opened this thread, I didn't see the poll! I wouldn't have listed all of those choices otherwise! D'OH!

Actually we could include many, many more but I was stuck with 20.:( Some reluctantly excluded were:

Red Dwarf
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
V
Tom Corbett

I tried to limit this to the more extraterrestrial series, hence the rationale for not including series like
The X-Files
Quantum Leap
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
The Twilight Zone
Sliders
Roswellhttp://home.austarnet.com.au/petersykes/topscifi/tv_today.html#3

Remember, this is a MULTIPLE CHOICE poll so you can vote more than once (up to 20 times) if you like.

Had to vote for Doctor Who. Best theme song ever, great and fun story lines and lots of aliens in low budget but imaginative costumes.

And I had an R/C K-9 when I was really young.

Oh, the X Files! How could I forget that one! Though the real reason I watched was for Gillian Anderson. There was just something about Scully, maybe the red hair and the fair complexion, maybe the cold exterior but you know there was a volcano waiting below....

But I digress. Remembering that show reminds me of other shows they basically stole from for their plots. Remember, half of the episodes were about the alien invasion plot, and the other half were all pretty much re-hashed stories from Outer Limits, The Night Stalker and The Twilight Zone

Darrin McGavin as Kolchak-great character, great series (with Simon Oakland as his editor, Tony Vincenzo), great series!

I hear you on Thunderbirds, loved it when i was a kid and still love it now.Can i give a shout for Buffy too.;)

Glad to see someelse who mentioned Buffy;)

The x files was also a favorite of mine and still is Scully is soooooo fine....

But of all the ones I voted for I would have to say I liked Firefly the best and the movie they made to try and tie up some loose ends due to its short lived stint on TV, still not sure they got that one right. I have also been a huge fan of the Stargate series and spin offs.

All the best

Dave

Since I started this I thought I would add a few thoughts about why each of these choices is on my list.
Andromeda: Not the best Roddenberry idea but better than at least two of the Star Trek franchise shows with good acting and compelling characters, especially the high guard ship.
Battlestar Galactica (original): Corny but entertaining, compelling story line, likeable characters, nice space hardware and dramatic (if repetitive) space combat; I loved Dirk Benedict as Starbuck and Richard Hatch as Apollo.
Battlestar Galactica (new): Fine cast and acting, compelling story plots, a darker tone than the original and surprising twists and turns in almost every episode; one of my favorites for sure.
Babylon 5: The best yet if I had to pick one; compelling action and drama, excellent cast and fantastic writing; the first to feature believable and interesting aliens.
Doctor Who: Great imagination and certainly entertaining, especially for its budget.
Doctor Who (2005): Really an updated version which is notable to me mostly for the new doctors (and Billie, of course).
Farscape: The sets, costumes, FX and co-star Claudia Black are all absolutely stunning; certainly rates in my top five.
Firefly: My second all time favorite; lower on Sci Fi and notable mostly for its superb cast and acting and excellent writing and character development set in a space setting.
The Invaders: A bit of the Fugitive pursued by aliens but quite entertaining mostly, especially for its time; with hindsight I might have better included V, especially the mini series.
The Outer Limits: "There is nothing wrong with your television. Do not attempt to adjust the picture"; a superb (especially for the time) episodic view of space and time travel; far ahead of its time and the source of material for many later series and movies.
Stargate SG-1: Good premise and fine cast but I frankly preferred the movie.
Stargate - Atlantis: A new variation that I have yet to sample but certainly has its legions of fans.
Star Trek (Original Series): The one that brought Sci Fi to the mainstream and interestingly tackled some then touchy social issues; Shatner and Nimoy were excellent together; if not for this show, many of the later Sci Fi series would never have happened; a must inclusion in the top 5.
Star Trek - The Next Generation: Excellent cast and interesting stories; likely the best of the franchise.
Star Trek - Deep Space Nine: Started weak and improved later; interesting stories and some good acting; many good episodes but overall I would rate it 4th in the franchise.
Star Trek - Voyager: The weakest of the franchise to me; of course it is saved by 7 of 9.
Star Trek - Enterprise: A close second to STNG for my favorite of the franchise. Very solid acting and interesting, if somewhat limited story lines. No question the writing for STNG was better but who could not enjoy Jolene Blalock (and her uniforms)?
Space 1999: One of the first interesting near future space adventures, decent acting by Landau and Bain.
Torchwood: Quirky but engaging, mostly earthbound so I probably should have left it out here.

For those that mentioned the X-Files, Nightstalker and Buffy, again, I was shooting for a more extraterrestrial focus.

Ooops sorry about that.

Lost in Space! One of my favorites as a kid. I find most of the recent sci fi shows unwatchable.

Well Combat I am not sure what you mean by "recent" but there are a lot of quality productions in that category I think. Of course what we like is based on our own taste and I never could sit thru a full episode of LIS.

Babylon 5..I still have vhs tv-taped episodes for seasons 2-5. Just cannot find myself spending that much on the dvd boxed sets yet...favorite moment...during the earth civil war, the Mimbarri fleet showing up at the space station to rescue the rebels....and who can forget the Shadows?

Firefly..#2 on my hit list...I love great story telling ...

New Battleship Galactica.....plot twists galore, great story telling again..

Great choices Michael; you can pick Sci Fi for me anytime.;):D I have the DVD sets for the first two and 1/2 of the third so far.

Outstanding choice. Amazed it was not mentioned earlier. Original series were some of best SF stories ever.

One of my favorite episodes (which I have not seen since I was a child) was about a comet hurling toward Earth. Space ships were built to try and save a portion of humanity, and they took off just before the comet hit.

Seconds after the ships left you saw the impact......then the camera pulled back and you saw a young boy pull a baseball out of his catchers mit and toss it back to the pitcher looking at the little cloud of dust rising off his mit.

Pretty cool!
