I am in the process of reading Major Dick Winters latest book about Easy Company. He wrote the book after many requests from readers and the HBO series. When Steven Ambrose returned the papers and documents from the book he wrote there was still many documents not used. The book was cowritten by a military historian who spent 30 years in the army. I would reccomend it after reading only one chapter. For example, I did not know when they jumped over Normandy it was the first time they used leg bags to carry their weapons and ammo in. No practice to see if they worked and every man jumping lost their weapons and had to retreive weapons from casulaties which might not be zeroed in for them. Leadmen

Thanks for the positive comment. Winters' book is high on my "want to get" list. He is such a natural leader, I want to see his comments on leading and being led. In the US we seem develop a LOT of managers and darned FEW leaders.

The next time I get to a bookstore (hopefully Friday) I am going to grab a copy of Winter's book. For me his first hand account is a definite must read.

This an outstanding book I've read it twice.
Leadman you talk about leg bags being used for the first time. With the Airborne there many first times. Most troopers had never been in a airplane until the day they made their first jump, most of them never made a landing in a airplane. Some of them had never seen an airplane. Most did not know what they were getting into but it paid more money. Thats what they wanted, you could raise a family on $35.00 week in 1941

Sounds interesting to read about that. I figured they had experience making jumps and practicing jumping with their gear. I read other books but Winter's book is the first I heard about the leg bags. John

I had heard about the leg bags in another excellent first hand account of the jump into Normandy, called Currahee, by Donald Burgett. This is the first of four excellent books by Mr. Burgett, who jumped into Normandy and Holland, served in the battle of the bulge and right on through to the end of the war in Europe. These books are my favorite accounts of the 101st Airborne, although I can't wait to pick up a copy of Dick Winter's book.

Hi All,

I have read it and will agree it is an excellent book with a lot of good personal insight. I have also read Burgetts book and would recommend them also.

Dave

Hello: I will look for Burgett's book when I go to B&N. Dave and Louis's reccomendation, how can I go wrong. Just got five books from Hamilton books. Stocking up for winter. Going on a little trip and will impress her when I sit in car reading Winter's book on the trip.It should work because she rather I just shut up about her driving. Leadmen

Hi Leadmen,

I dont know if Burgett's book is still in print it should but these days its really hard to figure why some books go out of print quickly and never are seen again except in places like ebay or some of the other sites you can find on the web. But at least you'll have someting to do on the trip.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Dave
