love that David Ortiz rallied the fans and city of Boston with his short emotional speech...

said Big Papi..."the jersey says Boston...not Red Sox"...

God knows solidarity for that city is a cry well deserved...

I was kind of surprised he got away without an FCC reprimand for the use of profanities though...

“This is our (bleeping) city and nobody is going to dictate our freedom,” Ortiz said, raising his right fist into the air. “Stay strong!”

in fact...I just saw on the news that FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski...says he has no problem with the fact that David “Big Papi” Ortiz dropped an F-bomb on live televison before today’s Boston Red Sox game.

Julius must be a Red sox fan...

It's where we're headed. Kurt Vonnegut predicted it, in his short story, "The Big Space F---", which he wrote back in 1972. Among other things, the American society he postulated was one in which profanity had become so commonly used, that it lost all meaning. Interestingly, he railed against such restrictions as a younger writer, then as an old man, decried that we'd become so coarse, and he contributed to that very trend.

Or the argument you'll get, from people who think you should just cuss whenever, is "Who are you to impose your morality on me, man?"

That is a good argument. Vonnegut had it right the first time. When you start down the road of profanity cleansing, what you may end up with is senseless benign drivel and a society where emotion is prohibited. Frankly I found nothing offensive about the example; maybe I just became coarse after too many degrees but often a colorful metaphor simply fits the situation.

don't get me wrong...I'm no Saint...I have been known to use that word on occasion myself...

I'm not condemning this...in fact...I think the city of Boston should have thrown a parade honoring the quick actions of the combined law enforcement...

in a day when Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake coordinate a "sneak peek"...and Madonna uses obscene gestures on stage at sporting event's venues...this is much easier to overlook in my opinion as "emotion" certainly ruled the day...

but honestly...just because I condone it...it doesn't make it right...

I'm sure some daddies had their little daughters in the stands when he said this...

I'm just a tad perplexed why the FCC not only condones it...but almost praises it...

again...totally different circumstances too...it was a time to rejoice and celebrate...a little latitude may be acceptable...

The rerun I saw of the event was bleeped, so I don't know what the original version was. But I'm a little perplexed here; you raised the issue, but state that you don't have a problem with it. So why post it in the first place?

don't be perplexed Bosun Al...

re-read both my posts and...

maybe you will see a common theme in them...

I don't know but in context, I agree completely with Julius. Given the moment, how could anyone, especially the FCC, do anything but praise it? It was a spontaneous, honest, emotional, expression of support for community and American values in a more than trying situation. Whatever words he chose to convey that compelling notion should be given more than a little slack. Actually, I think Ortiz upstaged the mayor, governor and president with his remarks; a bit more passion from them would have been welcome. I am not a fan of much federal regulation but I am frankly proud of the FCC reaction in this case.

I have to say I don't know why this is even an issue, considering the context (as mentioned by Harper).

I suppose in another situation, such as lampooned in George Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words" monologue, it would be an issue and frowned upon by the FCC.

Great to see where common sense can overcome both the governmental regulations and political correctness in one honest human moment of heartfelt emotion. Good for the FCC and Big Papi.

I nominate Big Papi and his bat to administer justice to this bombing scumbag.............

it really is...Boston deserved an emotional and spirited speech that a lot of people can identify with...

This went out only on cable TV which doesn't fall within the FCC's purview.
