I saw this movie about a French Jesuit missionary to proselytize the Hurons in North America. He is aided by the Algonquins and attacked by Iroquois Indians along the way. One tiny scene shows how slow and ineffective the matchlock gun was in a rapid skirmish.

I remember that film. I really liked it because it covered a period not often seen on film (I can't think of another film of a similar subject matter) I think I recorded it off cable onto a DVD.

How about The Mission with Jeremy Irons and Robert deNiro ? For similar riverine scenery, The Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio.

There is another recent missionary type movie set in Japan.
