I have mentioned this one before, but "The Day of Battle" by Rick Atkinson is the best WWII read in a very long time. I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the Italian campaign. Many of the accounts are entirely new to me. The glider landings on Sicily, the Fritz X bombs etc. This is everything the Ken Burns series was not.

I second the motion on Rick Atkinson's book. I am just finishing it. There were many things that happen that I never read before. For example, when 3rd Division started the attack towards Rome and Gustav line they had Sherman tanks pulling two threads with six containers each. (12 containers for each tank which were torpedo tubes cut in half lengthwise and each half tube held an infantryman laying down to pull through the minefields and protect the armor. It was a failure because of uneven ground and troops spilled out. Leadmen
