Have recently started watching this from the start. A big fan of legal series and enjoyed this one when it came out.

Great relationship between Denny Crane (William Shatner) and Alan Shore (James Spader) with them always ending up on the balcony at the end of the episode. Crane has "mad cow" and is a ladies man which leads to some interesting scenarios. Such as committing infidelity at his wedding reception. Serious as his new wife (Joanna Cassidy) sues for a share in the law firm.

Some humourous story lines. Female lawyer has a bad day and ends up going to bed with a nice cop who has let her off a traffic ticket. Next morning he calls her from the police station as needs a lawyer. Been arrested for impersonating a police officer. Scene with another lawyer (Tom Selleck) where they are commenting on leading roles and obvious references to their Star Trek and Magnum series. Betty White as a murderer (in a good way !).

Plenty of story lines which were clearly based on the politics / news of the 2000's.

Others I would watch again would be LA Law and Hill St Blues but not seen them around for a while.

Summary of Crane from Wiki.

A named partner of Crane, Poole & Schmidt, Dennis 'Denny' Crane is a renowned attorney of some fifty years of practice who claims he has never lost a case, and never will. He is an eccentric who considers himself a legend and loves to say his own name to "sign" his verbal utterances. In one of the final episodes of The Practice, he explained that often people don't believe they're in the room with a legend, so he says his own name to let them know it's true. Denny suffers from memory loss and confusion as part of the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, but often refers to his troubles as "mad cow disease" when his utterances are confusing to others or when he himself becomes confused. While he is still trying cases frequently as late as Season 1 of Boston Legal, by Season 2, he seems to have lost most of his talent for complex litigation, though he still shows flair in appealing to a jury in closing arguments. By Season 3 he mostly serves as a figurehead at the firm, rarely trying cases and appearing in court more often as a plaintiff and defendant due to his antics. When he does appear in court as a lawyer in later seasons, however, he still performs well.
Denny is a conservative who loves firearms and believes gun control is for "communists". He also refuses to defend anyone who is accused of extremely heinous acts; in one episode, he shoots a client because of the nature of his crime (raping and murdering a child). This is just one of several people he shoots over the course of the series, with several characters saying that Denny "shoots people". Denny enjoys an extremely close friendship with Alan Shore, is also a womanizer like Alan, and has no problem sleeping with the wives of judges and clients. Though he marries another woman in Season 2 (from whom he is quickly divorced after engaging in an act of infidelity at their wedding reception), he still pines for Shirley Schmidt. As he trusts Alan more than anyone, they get married in the last season to make sure Dennys greedy, money grubbing family doesn't get his fortune.

you should check out "The Wire"...
it was an HBO series...
available on HBO On Demand...
Michael K. Williams crushed his role as "Omar Little"...

Mike,
I recall US forum members posting about the Wire when it started. In those days did not subscribe to any channels so only got to watch it by buying a complete boxed set when series had ended. Then some serious bingeing. ^&grin Great series. Notable for the fact two of the main characters played by British actors (ie. McNulty and the Idris Elba character - I think Mayor was a Brit who was in Game of Thrones). Lots of great characters.

Brad,
Should have put spoiler alert as not got to that scene yet{sm2}{sm4} Crane seems to shoot a lot of people in the series. SPOILER ALERT - I have just passed the episodes where he shoots his own shrink. Then there was the one where he shot the client he did not like. Another great scene was when he appeared in court dressed as a Minuteman with musket to defend client and gives a rousing speech in support of guns. Then there was the line, after shooting his shrink, where he tells Shore he will never look at a gun again. Naturally in next episode shoots his shrink again and Shore reminds him he had said will not look at gun again. Replies he had not said he would not shoot one. That is why he is such a brilliant lawyer {sm4}

Just caught up with Dragon's movie / TV thread and saw this from a few days ago :

L.A. LAW---Corbin Bernsen and Blair Underwood are returning for the ABC reboot pilot for the legal tv series that ran on NBC from 1986-1994. Bernsen said, “I’ve often thought about revisiting L.A. LAW and Arnie Becker over the years. Now seems the perfect moment in time to explore our fast-changing world through Becker’s eyes. Fasten your seatbelts.”

Rebooting a series after 27 years !.
