Britains Crimean War additions? (1 Viewer)

Any thoughts about adding a few pieces to the old Britains Crimean "Charge of the Light Brigade" cavalry sets?

It would be somewhat simple to merely change the arm on a cavalryman to add a trumpet or a flag, and thus fill out the ranks.

Whenever the older Charge sets come up on Ebay, I note that they still sell for a good price and command several bidders. I am sure any additions would be welcome by the collectors and would sell.

Yo Trooper Dick, as long as they go back to the same size, the newer Britains are somewhat larger models ie; Capt Nolan its a stunning piece but slightly larger horse than the 1990s Light Brigade, and you know what your like for matching.
Bernard.

Absolutely -- they would have to make any new figures compatible with the 1998-1999 versions.

Dick

The more I think of it -- the companion Light Brigade sets made in th late 1990's all had only 1 style of horse. The cavalry- man figure was attached at the waist, so only his uniform color and hat needed to be changed from set to set.

I would think it quite simple to merely take the existing figure and change the arm so as to adapt to either holding a bugle, a flag, etc. I know these arms also exist as evidenced by the other "toy soldier" sets produced during this time peeiod which did have such figures.

I attribute the lack of overwhelming responses to this thread as merely an indication that the weather is warming-up and everyone is outside golfing, hiking, playing tennis, or gardening, etc., rather than a lack of interest and support for a very worthwhile request.

Dick

Dick, I don't think that the weather has much to do with it.

Like you the Crimean War is one of my favorites, but I kinda doubt that Britains would start a different style of figure to match the old 8800 series figures now that they have the new VC series up and going.

I just started collecting the new Crimean figures. I see how many I can get before they all gone.

Chuck

The crimean infantry figures that Britains is now making are very compatible in size and color with the old Britains series 8000's series. I don't know why they couldn't make a limited production run of a few cavalry figures. They wouldn't be in direct compeition with anyone except maybe themselves.

If they want to determine what kind of reception the figures might meet on the market, although they have o do is watch EBay when some of the older sets come up for auction.

Dick

Dick...we can only hope. I would consider buying if and when they would be made. :)

Hi Guys,

I like the idea of more mounted sets as opposed to the single figures too but it seems like the trend is towards the singles. Hopefully the good folks at Britians will try and give us a little of both so we can expand on our Crimean sets.

Dave

One can only assume that if Britains wants to sell sets as well as maintain the loyalty of the "long-standing" Britains collectors they would do so. I believe they realize this already by the fact that they are already putting out some figures in "the old style" as evidenced by their collector club specials.

Yo Trooper Dick mate, looks like what Erika is saying about the poll that you can go whistle in the wind. I am having to move away from Britains to get my cavalry made , just had email from one of the top makers says they will make all the Hussars I want, that will do for me my son. On a more serious note Troopers about all the poll's we are having, its about time we had one for all makers to STOP PUTTING HORSES ON PLATES, imagine my whole Light Brigade being on plates it would look really stupid, and about time we got back to the normal size horse, instead of these giant horses they make today. For 100 years plus we had horses free standing in different gaits, and then all of a sudden a horse forgot how to stand up on its own four legs lol. Its ok like the Old Britains sets with Officers on rearing horses to have a small plate. I know I have the Hamleys on plates but that is only because they were regiments never made before, so it was a case of "needs must" but you wont see another in my collection ever. Like to Know what you Troopers think about these comments, so MOUNT UP Troopers shoot from the hip, I can take it.
Bernard.

Hi Bernard,

You are fortunate that you can get some of the Hussars made for what I assume is a reasonable price. I wish the postage from places like Clash of Arms wasnt so disproportionate because I would probably get them to send me castings of a bunch of different cavalry types so I could also build a bigger Crimean display. Oh well such is the stuff of wishes, right. Till then I am likely to keep getting the Britains offerings. As for the Horses and various stands I have plenty of both types and dont really understand the big problem. I do wonder at the size differences for some of the horses but hey in life horse are like people they come in all sizes and colours, so not a real big deal.

So I basicly agree with you but dont totally see what the issues is so perhaps you can elaborate or even better post a photo of some so we can see the differences and discuss them.

All the best

Dave

As you noted, I do have some vintage cavalry pieces on small plates (all are rearing figures) -- but that's understandable as there are only two back legs to support the figure. I have resisted (and will continue to do so) buying any cavalry figures "stuck" on plates -- I can't understand the need for them at all.

Dick

While i do agree about the plates on horses, I wish they had put them on the ones pulling the Irish State coach. (Or designed the horses differently. Because of this I can't display the set properly )

Regarding the horses sizes as Dave said they do vary in real life. Actually though the newer horses are more correct. I did a comparison of them in another thread and the old hollowcast Britains only work out to about 15hh which is basically a pony.

My last post on this issue -- (no applause please) -- the old style, smaller Britains Crimean cavalry sets always do well on the EBay auctions.

However, I see lots of the newer "larger" britains on Ebay and curiously enough they are selling for less the manufacturer's suggested retail prices. I wonder if that means there are still more collectors of the "older style" figures than the newer ones? Makes one stop and pause!
