I've got some Britains Ltd toy soldiers from the 1950's and 1960's that need to be repainted in places. I hope to match the original colors of their coats, tunics, Bearskins, etc. Is there some source out there that can help me make those matches?

Hi Asterix,

I am no expert on toy soldiers. Here are some general and assumptive points to start off with and perhaps the other treefroggies would chip in.

I assume that Britains in the 50-60s would have used Humbrol enamels then, presumably all gloss.

I don't think that Britains varnished their figures. I assume that the Britains figures were not undercoated with primer.

Most of the painting was outsourced to housewives who would have been supplied with standard paints by Britains. I think that Quality control was largely based on simple visual inspection.

One colour that may have been mixed would be flesh and pink cheeks. I observe that this differs in various Britains pictures.
