Someone recently sent me pictures and description of a Britains set given to them by their grandparents after they returned from a trip to England approximately 44 years ago.
Using the Great Book of Britains I have identified it as Set 2094 (later renumbered as 9402) State Open Road Landau, described as HM the Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in the '1902' State Open Road Landau with team of six Windsor Greys.
The book dubs it 'an ambitious and beautiful toy to rival the State Coach itself' and says it was introduced in 1954 and was the last of the hollowcast sets to be retired in 1967.
The condition is unboxed with some chipping (aka 'loved') but general good condition with no missing pieces and the GBB gives it a rarity rating of 33 in unboxed state "Better sets that take some searching to find" but does not offer a valuation.
Google search results offer values all over the map.

The individual is asking for identification and an estimated value. I've figured out the id. Can anyone assist with a valuation?
Thanks in advance for any info or assistance!

Hi Shannon

Thats an interesting set to pop up for valuation. The best person to ask would be Norman Joplin or perhaps Scott has one squirled away. Norman could likely say with out batting an eye on the value. Personally I would say about 300 to 500 if all the riders and horses are present and not too "loved". But thats a guess and it certainly would be higher if the box was included.

My Norman Joplin books lists it as $450-$500 assuming it is mint in box. I think therefore that $200-$300 would be a better estimate.

Its a pretty subjective arguement - as it'll be worth what ever someone wishes to spend on that day.
I was able to get a boxed example several years ago for $NZ300.....which was a pretty **** good bargain.

Any chance of taking it out of the box and setting it up for some photos please airwiggy? It looks to be in superb nick - and I just love to see older Britains that folks actually own - but out of the box - if possible? johnnybach:)

Hi Shannon,
Two fairly recent sales of W. Britains Set 9402 are;

Vectis Auctions; Sep 2010, Truly M.I.B. (outer wrapping paper still present), 200.00 Pds +22.5% Buyer’s Fee or $322.35 USD.

Old Toy Soldier Auctions USA; Nov 2010, Excellent condition (Box excellent), $300.00 + 18% Buyer’s Fee or $354.00 USD.

Thanks so much guys,
This is definitely out of the box with some chipping and Johnnybach, she sent me pictures by mail that I can scan and put up for you if you'd like.
Just found out today she has internet access so I will send her the link to this thread and all your helpful comments.

Thanks again!

Hi Shannon - Do you know, it's like waiting at a bus-stop for ages - then all of a sudden, two buses come along at the same time!

"Sarge" has only recently put on display in his thread "A Latest Find" (see pic post#7) another beautiful Landau - which I have been dribbling over!! So yes please - on the principle that you can never get too much of a good thing - would love to see more pictures.

Actually, these are just the sort of things that I like best about the forum - the chance to actually SEE the things we all love so much - especially the rarer bits and pieces I will probably never get to own - like these fab carriages.

Having said that - I have my eye on a castings version of a Landau from a UK supplier - so will be casting an eye (pun intended) over the paint jobs of these two versions with a view to (perhaps) producing a lookalike version myself.

Thanks folks - more pictures and photos PLEASE - I love 'em - and the good-hearted folks who post them too. Whilst I do like the debates on "Who really won the (yawn) War - all over again - and again - and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. What I, (and I strongly suspect most forum folks) like best - is pictures of Toy soldiers. Thankyou, johnnybach:salute::

Well said!:salute:::salute::

Shannon:

For whatever help it might be, I picked up mine for a little under US$200. The condition was quite nice, with all the tracework and bits present and intact. On the one hand I would say, learning what I know of it now, that I was quite fortunate. On the other hand, apparently it had been sitting about for quite some time priced at $225 or so.

I do hope this helps.

There seem to be quite a lot of tasty pieces available in Foreign parts. Unfortunately for me - it would seem that I live in one of those foreign parts where I appear to be the only Toy Soldier collector around. I manage to get what I want by purchasing castings - and painting them myself because of the Internet - which I am beginning to understand a bit better. The price you paid for a piece I have only ever seen pictures of chum - is roughly the same as a similar casting to your original.

I would have said a few years ago "You lucky son-of-a-gun" - but now - I quite like doing it myself. I guess I've got used to it - and in many ways, prefer it.

But you are still a lucky chap Sarge. Look after it! It's a corker! When I eventually do one of my own - I'll show it here. OK? johnnybach

Johnny, mate:

You are, or course, required to show it once done! I, for one, will be looking forward to it.

Meanwhile, back to the cellar. I'm repainting a fistful of Scots Guards (with SLR's) I got from another fellow on the forum.

Best,
Sarge
