Here are a couple of pics of my latest small project. They are British Line Infantry - in stovepipe Shako's, on the March to take part in one of the battles of the Peninsular War. These lads must be replacements from GB - as their uniforms are virtually pristine - and not the ragged patchwork quilts that most British uniforms were by 1813, in this campaign

I bought these as a small set of 9 castings (30mm Flats) from Berlinner Zinnfiguren. These aren't quite completed, as yet - as I want to do a bit more work on the shading to their trousers, spats, boots etcetera. To help with this, I have sealed in the top half of each figure with a thin coat of varnish - which helps avoid damage to the completed paintwork when handling them again. Here's a couple of views showing each side of the figures - so far. jb

.... and Herr Bach did it again,- really nice paintjob figures look great - a little more light while shooting the photos would
even enhance the looks of this nice looking group I guess. What will be next? May be a nice cavalary unit???
Very well done, I enjoy your threads, thanks for sharing
kind regards

I'm also a "New Recruit" to photography Wolfgang, and as I'm working in my temporary quarters ( a small table in a spare bedroom) - where I don't have a lot of light to take better pics. I tried the flash - but it just bleaches out the colours - so do my best to at least show what I'm doing, with the aid of some light from a table-lamp. Sorry I don't have the kit - or skill to do better here.

Back at my "proper" bench - I have better light - so have a fighting chance of getting somewhat better pics there - especially when the sun is out. When I get back there - I will re-photo my "flats" and post them again in a separate thread.

As to what's next - I think I'll try my hand at a British Royal Artillery - Two Elephant towed - Field Gun, in India circa 1880-90's. Not quite Cavalry - though both elephants are on the run. They are 30mm Flats, of course, from zinnfiguren-rieger.de . Here's an unpainted preview:

Will that do?{sm4} jb

Hello Johnny Bach,

I can see what you mean being able to take good photograph's is a hobby by itself.
Especially if you have to improvise. I am still struggeling to get decent pictures regardless the
lightning condition. Looking forward to see the elephant gun becomeing alive. I used to
own this set many years ago, it is still there I guess - proberly stored away in one of the too many storage boxes ...
After a rather frustrating casting session this evening I am tempted to have a look for them and do some painting again. Perhaps an idea to use waterbased paint and gloss the figures in a final coat.
Anyway looking forward how you will progress...^&grin
kind regards
Wolfgang

Hi W. Many people do use Acrylics ( because they dry faster) - but I really do like using enamels ( I Use Humbrol). Maybe it is old-fashioned - but I just like it and am used to how it works. I'm never in a hurry to finish things - so just enjoy what I do - and the way I do it - which is all that really matters to me. I usually have a CD or two, to keep me company anyway.

I've actually started on one of the elephants - as I was waiting for some painted trousers to dry - and had a bit of grey/white/black on my palette - so used it up on my first base-coat for my Jumbo.

As to my photography - well..........late starter.......so maybe progress may be slow. However - a poor pic - is better than no pics at all - especially in this hobby - which is SO visual.

Yes - do dig out the brushes - it's always very pleasurable for me to splosh a bit of paint around.:Djb

I continued with a bit more work on my figures, which really meant applying more paintwork/shading to the lower half of my figures. Once satisfied with my minor alterations and touching in various details - I applied a thin coat of varnish to the parts not previously covered.

So this is where I am with these 9 figures. I'm deliberating whether they need any additional work - but at the moment I'm pretty satisfied with how they look. jb

I also played around with the "edit" button on Photobucket - and by playing around with their features - they seem to add a bit more tone/warmth and definition to my poor photos. Whaddya think?? :D jb

Hello JB,

Now you've let the cat out of the bag. Us painters never painted anything except to photoshop the effect...:)

BTW, You did promise us a properly painted elephant battery, I believe?

Had a complaint that one lot looked like it needed a bit more light - so found that Photobucket had a few tricks available - so tried em out. Ought to save a lot of paint - that!

Elephants in the pipeline Vic. - but got distracted by a modern 54mm Army Air Corps Band (which needed a bit of modification) - so have both projects sharing some paint tins - at the moment. I also have to go shopping (again) {sm2}with La Commandante - so all taking up painting time.

They will both turn up - eventually. {sm3} jb

Here's a quick pic or three - Vic:D

First shows how I start off - with a basic paint wash on Jumbo1 - and the other two shows how I build up washes and other colours on top - to get to this stage. I have more work to do with them - but as a change from JUST Flats - I've been having a go at a 54mm Army Air Corps Band - which I think I will show elsewhere, later on - as they involve a bit more than painting - as the kit needed to be modified a bit.

Oh - these are very nice. I like the way that you have painted these elephants. I think this is the original way that these zinnfiguren were meant to be painted.

Glad you like them - and the way I paint 'em. I was afraid of 30mm Flats for quite a while, as I thought that I would have too much difficulty with the small size. However, after always advising others to "have a go" at painting - I felt a bit hypocritical - so gave them a shot! I looked up a few sites for help and inspiration with shading - though these are not finished yet.

Glad I did now - as I think I'm hooked - though will continue with my first love - of Glossy 54mm fully 3-D figures too.

JB,
Totally missed your infantry posting Very nice!, you just whipped out the Elephant?
must be nice... But one of the real thrills for me of flats is the seemingly endless subjects, you can really indulge your whimms!

Hi Ray - Hoped you would like 'em. Well - I like Jumbos - and others asked where they were - so I had a go at one - even though I've recently started a larger scale Military Band. I like Bands - a lot - as they are so colourful - so watch out for more bands in the smaller scale in future. I think I'll continue painting up both sets, side by side - which I frequently do - as painting essentially the same figure (for a band) can become a bit tiresome - so a change of subject (and scale) can be a good thing, for me.

I usually indulge my whims in ANY scale - as painting castings or stripped and repaired broken figures doesn't have to cost the Earth - and I'm finding that unpainted Flats are usually VERY reasonably priced - and getting easier to source - thanks mostly to your tips on web-sites. Just wish I'd had a go at flats a lot earlier - as they don't take up so much space!!!:D

Cheers - jb

JB,
Though I've not dabbled in the Conversion side of this hobby, I have done my share, seeing the new K&C Blitz ambulance(years back I got tired of waiting on several models) reminded me of some of my projects I'll post some pics on my collection site, mostly vehicles but some figures, at the time I was nearly totally into WWII.

I'll watch out for some Ray. Cheers jb
