Hi,

Just bought an early G M Minature French Cavalry man the figure has reins which are broken. Anyone repaired reins before and have a good method?

Thanks

Gary

Hi Gary,

Not sure if you have had this repaired or not.

Would you have a picture of the piece? That would show the breakage and condition for resolution.

Hi Gary,

Based on the photos, I believe that you meant GNM Miniatures? The photos were not that clear as to the detail on the reins. I am not that familiar with GNM Miniatures but here are a couple of similar photos which I took from the internet. They show similarly posed Napoleonic calvary figures.

I think that the reins are metal strips. If so, then I would suggest buying some sheet metal (available from Scalelink http://www.scalelink.co.uk/acatalog/Sundries__Lead_foil__Chain__Adhesives.html ), then cut metal strips and use these to replace the reins.

I notice the bent gun barrel too. Try straightening the barrel covered with a lot of tissue paper in between a pair of small pliers, held parallel with the barrel.

I hope that helps.

Hi,

Yes they are GNM Miniatures indeed. Thanks for the advice I'll give it ago.

Cheers

Airfix used to produce a range of 1/32nd scale figure kits ( they may still do?). I remember making their model of the Scots Grey donkeys ages ago. You cut the reins, belts etc from thin plasticard and they worked very well. I know it is a metal figure but plasticard is easy to work.

Gary,

I would file the damage reign ends off and make a new bit by cutting and bending a paper clip. I would drill the edges of the horse's mouth and Araldite the bit in position.

A simple way to make reins (as recommended by John Firth here on the forum) is to get a section of good quality electrical tape and remove the adhesive backing with prepsol (white spirits). Then cut the reins to length, feed through the bridle rings and superglue into position. The reins are soft and will take acrylic paint (which your figures are most likely painted with) easily.

I used this method a while back on this mounted figure in 2012 and the reigns are still intact and in good condition.

These horses were repaired the same way-

For leather straps and reins I've been using soft wire (probably lead) used to add weight to fishing lines and purchased at sporting goods stores. It comes in various diameter/weight which allows you to have straps of various sizes. Owing to it's softness, it can be flattened by taping to a ceramic tile and then rolling a short piece of brass pipe over it. Even when flattened, it can be bent sideways providing you're careful. When the proper shape is achieved it can be attached to the proper position using superglue.

Good luck . . .
