For other researchers out there, the German Federal Archive (Budesarchiv) has started making a large number of photos available on the web thru Wikipedia. They are currently sorted by year and you have to page thru them to find what you might want, but this is an excellent resource for period photos by German photographers. The WW2 stuff is a major resource. Many of the photos have appeared in publications. Good material on German troops, tanks, etc. Even some captured stuff like German troops driving off in a couple of captured US M4 Shermans in Italy in 1944.
The web resources are growing! Recently millions of old LIFE magazine images came to the web via Google, which includes a huge number of military images that are still being mined.
