I had already completed a Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie pair earlier. However, as this was a magnificent solid plastic casting, I couldn't resist doing yet another figure of the Empress herself. I've decided to slightly modify the piece. The waist, which was too narrow from the sides, was built up from the back. The right hand was substituted and I decided to add a handkerchief to her hair at the back.

Great job, what material did you use for her Handkerchief ?

Hi Ivanhoe,

I had used a blob of modelling putty. I initially thought of sculpting the hanging cloth. Then I decided to make it out of sheet metal which would be easier. I cut a square sheet and folded it and glued that in place instead.

Not having seen the 'final' of the "modeling putty", I can say that you made a great choice in the "sheet metal", although it was probably difficult to get the folds...sure turned out great, looks like fabric.

I can see your point about putty vs foil. Foil was a good choice, since you're representing a piece of fabric (whether solid or lace). Putty would work for a lady's hair gathered in a net, though, too.

I always take the path of least resistance if possible...

Painted the face and skin Starting to add other details. The Handkerchief was painted in matt white. When dry, I used white in an impasto style to create texture.

Just mounted this piece on a nice base for further handling.

I grinded down the flat top of the crown with a motor drill to create a hollow.

The dress was shaded with black/brown to create dramatic folds.

Thank you for your generous comments, thoroughly underserved.

I touched up the face, worked on the eyes, added rouge to the cheeks and highlighted some areas.

Still got more to do on the dress.

Shadows were in black and highlights were in white. The cloak was painted in dark blue. When dry, gold embroidery was simulated with shades of yellow ochre, highlighted with white.

according to this painting ( Franz Xaver Winterhalter ) the colour of the pearls look to be "Peach"


The good pearls must not look as of a dull colour
A touch of satin varnish would enhance the shine
This is not a critic ? I just see that you try to be as realistic as it can be

Like very much what you have already done, step by step your skill rise up an up

Good point about satin for the pearls. In fact, the colours should be warmer on my piece.

I really am a bit of a detail fanatic. Surprising why I can't build armour models...

All this while, I have been trying to improve my modelling skills as I really want to explore making shadow box dioramas.
