Is it possible to make this castle so i can use KC, Wbritain and First Legion medieval figures?

Is there anyone who can build it out of foam or whatever....so it will look like this from the photo?

Hi Ales,

I think that this castle is the one in this website:
http://www.burgenwelt.org/slowenien/rifnik/object.php

If so, it is Burgen Egg located in Slovenia. There are some photos of it as a ruin now and there is also a site plan layout.

Looks like an ambitious project.

Hello Victor!

Yes, this is an corect castle! I am interested if someone can make a copy of this castle for my medieval toy soldiers. I will like to use KC, Wbritain and First Legion with this diorama castle....It does not need to look exactly the same...There is no need for the hill, forest,... only the walls, towers,...there is also no need for the house/mansion under the walls,....i will be happy just with the walls and towers, so it will look like this castle.

Hi Ales,

There was an article in Miniature Wargames which detailed construction of a similar castle (Kalmar) in 1/72 scale. I had made a model following this out of cardboard. It was quite big measuring at least 1 metre square.
Your proposed castle would be in 1/30 scale. Simply put, expect at least a doubling of the floor area. I'll see if I can find a copy of the article and post it here for your ref.

you made an castle out of cardboard!??
Did it hold the weight of the figures?
I was thinking an hard foam....maybe painted or put some little stones on it with glue,....the size is not a problem, i have a big room....if it will be done properly maybe i can donate the castle to the museum, if they are interested.
Do you know some diorama makers who can made this castle for me?
I do not have the skills to do it myself....i have problems with decorating the Christmas three haha

Hi Ales,

You can use other material such as foamboard, resin or wood.

I used 2-3 ply cardboard which is very strong and can take the weight of wargames figures. These are also used to build children's playhouse and I see no reason why they can't be used for 1/30 scale buildings either. Besides lightness, they are reasonably cheap.

Detailing is done with cardboard cut into tiles to represent brick. The surface is then given a basic wash with various wall putties and then painted. the effect is very good. I will search for the article and post it there.

You are in the right sub-forum. There are many capable diorama makers here. The main issue is cost and shipping. The finished model may have to be shipped in parts and reassembled at site.

Have a look at this site, you can purchase moulds and with some moderate skill make yourself a castle...………….. You would need to find someone in your part of the world to make one for you if you don't want to attempt it.
I would do it but it could never be sent to you from Australia without costing more then it was worth and it would not get there intact anyway.

Try contacting Jakob from Toy Soldiers in Denmark. He makes awesome buildings and I reckon he could build the castle for you. He ships worldwide and charges reasonable prices for what you get. The only issue could be the shipping due to the size of the castle as Wayne said in the previous post but it might be possible. I have commissioned him to make some buildings and dioramas for me and they arrived intact and look great.

Alternatively there's David from TM Terrain who also makes fantastic structures. He lives in the UK.

Hi Ales,

I found the article! I'll make a scan by this weekend and post it.

Here is the scan of Kalmar castle. I can't open the pages as this is very tightly bound. This should give you an idea of what the model could look like in a larger scale.

Here is another mountain fort by Ian Weekley who together with James Main contributed many articles on buildings to wargaming magazines.

Looks interesting. I must tell you that this castle that i am interested (Rifnik Castle) have nothing similar with the Kalmar castle, i am sorry...Kalmar Castle is like ten times bigger, have more towers, size,....this one as you can see from the photo have only 3 towers and at the back of the Castle there is nothing more, maybe a wall, because it is on a big hill and it have natural protection, no one can attack them from the back, it is design that way, they choose location very carefully, i know, i live near that castle, today they are ruins of the towers at the back is no room for anything more towers, yard,...they have some buildings attach in the front as you can see from the photo and in case of the attack they run in to the towers for protection, this is it.
Of course the towers was conected with the walls and they have a small yard and stuff but it was not a big thing, nothing like Kalmar

Hi Ales,

Looks like your proposed model footprint would not be as big.

Rgds Victor

this is what i am trying to tell you. It is a small castle....NOT big as Kalmar,...much smaller this three towers and some walls, because it is in a good location, the back of the castle was on the big hill so no one can attack from behind, they only defend the front. The castle was build around 12 century so there were no canons invented yet, so the attackers can only attack with bow and arrows, which is not a problem for the defenders
