Who remembers this show with Buster Crabbe? It was my first intro to the French Foreign Legion. I remember sending away with boxtops for a black and red-topped kepi just like the one worn by Buster Crabbe. I even sent a letter to the FFL in France and asked how to join and they sent me a copy of their magazine Kepi Blanc and a letter in French both of which I still have.

I had a bagged set of Marx figures when I was young. I never did get the playset. I have chased it a few times on Ebay, one of the fun memories of my youth!:)

I had the same kepi with the neck cover. Never tried to join the FFL though.........:)

I barely remember it but I wanted to join the FFL too.:D

For me it was Gary Cooper in "Beau Geste". That movie hooked me on the French Foreign Legion. What a classic! Never tried to join though . . . :p

I sure do remember it. Was one of my favorites as a kid. Was a real FFL freak for a long while, especially when I got older and read about FFL in WW1, Indochina, and Algeria. "Hell in a Very Small Place" is a GREAT book and I really liked the movie "March or Die". Never got near to joining up, though.:D -- lancer

Yes I used to watch Capt. Gallant all the time. Once of my favorite shows when I was a kid. I'm not sure what time period it was supposed to be set in though.

By the uniforms I would guess late 1940s--50s.

Thanks for the clip

The first season of the television show was filmed on location in French Morocco with many actual Legionnaires and their installations featuring in the show. With increased danger to the crew, the series moved to Italy. The studio was one owned by Sophia Loren and was just outside the gates of the US Army base, Camp Darby, near Pisa.
