Captain Horatio Hornblower

...the one with Gregory Peck and Virginia Mayo. I saw the DVD last night and it's worth another look if you only saw it on TV or VHS. Lots of stuff usually cut for time on TV. Uniforms were "Hollywood-ized" to give the men wider shoulders. One Spanish officer appears to have a Russian green uniform on. Very good detail of sailing and battle at sea that I hadn't seen before.

Look for Christopher Lee as the Spanish captain of the Natividad and Stanley Baker (Zulu) as bosun Harrison.

Scott,
Have you seen the TV serie ?
How is the movie compared to it ?
Thanks,
Michel

The movie with Gregory Peck is a classic and everything about it was well done and well acted for its day. Lots of ship to ship and hand to hand...I did enjoy the series ,but lamented that there was not enough ship to ship combat to suit me. But otherwise, well acted and professionally done..Michael

It is like comparing a fine Burgundy to a fine Bordeaux. The movie with Gregory Peck is a classic generally and of the genre. The series is indeed also very well acted but as noted, does lack for ship to ship combat and suffers from the more limited budget of a television production. Nothwithstanding the limited special effects of the early fifties, the movie set a standard for depicting ship to ship combat that was not bested for over 50 years when the very well made Master and Commander was shot. Also like a fine wine, it seems to improve with age and I continue to enjoy each viewing as much or more than the last.

Hahah! I've been going back to watch these old ones with my daughter and I'm happy to see them restored and uncut on a larger color TV screen than the B&W portable of my youth.

Pretty good "racy" scene between Peck and Mayo outside the wardroom. It's all eyes and words and "the servant won't tell."

Yes I have. The TV series is fun and has some good moments recreating the novels of the Hornblower's youth. Ioan Gruffudd is a good Hornblower. This actor seems to get all the roles where he's in a row boat pulling people out of the water. Hornblower, Titanic, and, Great Expectations.

The movie is something unto itself as Forester had some input to the script.

Well yes....but I was brought up on the Gregory Peck film from b&W TV to seeing the DVD on a larger screen. ;)

Hahahah!

I even liked him as Prime Minister Blair in Frost/Nixon.

I am currently reading Hornblower and the Atropos, which covers his first experiences as Captain. That and this thread just inspired me to order the movie from Netflix for another viewing.

I enjoy both the movie and the recent TV series. Peck and Gryffudd were/are very good actors and played the character well. For me, it's like two different varieties of beer, one's a Bock, one's a Hefeweizen, I like both, and keep both on hand, but enjoy them at different times.

Prost!
Brad
