A £2,000 reward is being offered for the return of items stolen from a museum, including a Russian bugle from the Charge of the Light Brigade. The stolen bugle came from the Balaclava battlefield in the Crimea. World War II hero General Sir John Hackett's medals were also stolen. I guess thieves really have no shame! It is a sad fact of life, nowadays, that artefacts and medals do have a value on the open market. I for one, was surprised that this Museum had not had a duplicate set of medals made for display purposes.

As explained in an earlier post - I recently visited the old "South Wales Borderers" museum in Brecon - where some 16 Victoria Crosses are on display. Chatting with one of the curators about this stunning display - I found that all were in fact duplicates (you would never know), as having spoken to various insurers - the museum had found that the premiums for the staggering value of such items - would have been difficult to meet.

So sadly, because of the actions of a few thieves - we are highly likely to see only duplicates medals and such-like in the future in many museums, because of the despicable actions of a few - and this "trade" in medals awarded for valour. Johnnybach

Yes, nowadays, the stealing of medals is a huge problem....{sm4}

Never ceases to amaze me the depths of lowness that some people will go to....I really hope that these items are returned to thier rightfull
owner, and the persons responsible for this despicable theft are duly punished.
