I have just inherited my grandfathers Tower of london chess set which he bought for £1000 in 1978, i have the original charter of ownership signed in the tower of london by Field MArshal Sir Geoffrey Baker and Major Genral WDM Raeburn and also the original Humbrol primers and colours certificate. I even have the original envelope from the manufacturer sent from Twickenham, London dated 13 DEC 1978. The set is number 8 of 500.

At this stage i have no idea of the repair of the set or the oak table as it is in transit but the paperwork is in my possession.

This isn't really a sales pitch but a cry for help really, i have no idea of its value for insurance purposes, and if the thing is worth a few quid then I may consider selling it to an enthusiastic collector.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Tom

Charles Stadden made four different chess sets. The Tower of London being the least seen. I've never seen one. The others I've seen go
from £400 to £1,000. And they were all mint. You might want to talk to The Armoury of St. James http://www.armoury.co.uk/ located at
17 Piccadilly Arcade in London. They have some of the more rare Staddens. Also, the people at Vectis Toy Auctions http://www.vectis.co.uk/Page/Index.aspx. Or even Bonhams Auctions located in New Bond Street, London. They will give you an evaluation for insurance for a small fee. If you decide to sell talk to several people. You are
crossing over two categories of collectors. Toy Soldiers [Stadden specific] and Chess sets. My guess is that the people interested in Chess
Sets would pay more. I have a friend in Virginia that has the other three sets [American Revolution, American Civil War and Napoleonic],
who has been trying to sell his sets for years with no takers.

Of course there is always eBay if you are so inclined.

I have over 350 of the Stadden 90mm figures. Most are catalog, but quite a few bespoke one-offs. Charles Stadden's son and daughter
still deal with their fathers figures on a small scale. His daughter is the best painter around.

Anyway hope this helps. It would be interesting to see some pictures if you have time. Feel free to contact me via PM on this forum.

Dave, I had the same thought. It'll be good to hear from Bernard again, I haven't seen him around in a while.

Welcome, Tom, we should be able to help you.

While you're waiting for Cardigan to respond, I suggest having a look in the Stadden subforum (I think we have one specifically for Stadden, under Other Manufacturers). I think it was last year that Bernard or someone else posted about a Stadden chess set that came up on eBay. There might be some useful info there, too.

Prost!

As I exited this thread, I had to chuckle--we're in the Stadden forum right now! D'OH! Anyway, have a look and look for the other threads on the chess sets.

Prost!
