Bloody Hell...how could I have forgotten that show....My fav was Col Potter...Harry Morgan...he came a long way from a bit part as a baddie in Bend in the River starring Jimmy Stewart ( Harry Morgan was also in the Glenn Millar Story)..amazing I can remember that ....and forgot all about MASH....amazing MASH was so successful and the Korean War is still a forgotten war.....Princess Patrica Canadian Light Infantry...fought in the Kapyong Battle...I knew a bloke who was in that unit....(he transfered to the Aust Army)....a bloke called McLeod...bit older than me...he had a few good warie's to tell......you have ruined my day Snowyowl.....how the heck did I forget MASH.....cheers TomBHave you forgotten Mash, one of the most successful TV shows ever?
Tom, Korean War is a forgotten war but it has not been ignored by Hollywood. Just Google a list for Korean War movies and quite a few show up. Along with Pork Chop Hill there are such classics as The Glory Brigade, The Bridges at Toko-Ri, The Steel Helmet, Men in War, Take the High Ground, and The Hook. There are dozens of them. -- AlHopefully it is....I find it very hard to get any uniform info on the Korean War...Forgotten War...forgotten everything.....apart from the US...there were heaps of other counties involved in the Korean War....not enough TV coverage ?....can only remember one movie on Korea...Pork Chop Hill...with Gregory Pitt......and...just remembered ...Alan Ladd made an airforce movie about a bloke called McDonald (I think) an MIG ace.....I know the war happened ...it is on wiki...cheers TomB
Al....you sure are up on your movies.....I remember Bridges at Toko -Ri ...cannot place the others....what I like about this forum is that some-one is sure to have info on any subject that a member may be interested in......thanks for that.....I am not that flash on google searching...tend to end up on a real estate site....regards TomBTom, Korean War is a forgotten war but it has not been ignored by Hollywood. Sorry, didn't mean to ruin your day. I knew a few guys from the Princess Pats. Shared accommodations with one of their Warrant Officers for 6 months while we were on a course.Bloody Hell...how could I have forgotten that show....My fav was Col Potter...Harry Morgan...he came a long way from a bit part as a baddie in Bend in the River starring Jimmy Stewart ( Harry Morgan was also in the Glenn Millar Story)..amazing I can remember that ....and forgot all about MASH....amazing MASH was so successful and the Korean War is still a forgotten war.....Princess Patrica Canadian Light Infantry...fought in the Kapyong Battle...I knew a bloke who was in that unit....(he transfered to the Aust Army)....a bloke called McLeod...bit older than me...he had a few good warie's to tell......you have ruined my day Snowyowl.....how the heck did I forget MASH.....cheers TomB
Princess Pat's...the nick name...I had forgotten that,,,,What type of course were you doing ?...Were you a Cadet ?...regular army ?....or a part timer doing full time training ?,,,Hey...nosey aint I...cheers TomBSorry, didn't mean to ruin your day. Missed this post somehow....hear the joke about the Aussie artillery in Korea.....they would fire 3 wooden shells ...then a HE shell.....the wooden shell's were to knock on the Chinese's Bunker doors....Knock...Knock...Knock.....Who is there ?....Bang.......pretty crumby but it was a joke going around at that time....talking about open sights.....when the VC attacked the Aussie gun position at Fire Base Coral in Vietnam...the gunners fired ...I think what they called...splinter shells.... over open sights at them...the VC captured one gun (105 Fd Howz) but it was soon recaptured...my brother in law was there.......reckoned it was a bit of a hairy night....cheers TombThe surviving Korean War vets here were appointed as Parade Marshals in the big annual parade here so they aren't completely forgotten. I can remember a WO that I had years ago telling us young snots about firing 25 lbers over open sights at charging N. Korean/Chinese troops.
We have a bit in common...I joined the Army in 54.....moved around a bit..spent most of my time in infantry ..I really stuffed up though....changed corps to get out of infantry and was posted straight back to the infantry Regiment I had just left as an attached corp...did the usual courses but none as interesting as you seem to have...I did French at school but failed dreadfully...the Le and La, were fine...the rest was the problem.....you would be an old fart like me in the 70's ?.....I dont really collect, I like to make things from sculpey as a hobby....K&C which appear to the King Pin on this forum do not appear to be big on Vietnam or the Pacific War...I have seen some excellent SVN figs from other TS firms....might try some Aust in New Guinea figures later....have been NG...Lae and Wewak while I was in the army...rugged country.....their beer Sth Pacific...UGH ( It may have improved ...I hope so )....regards TomB.I did 27 years reg. force. Joined the RCAF but as a medic I spent time with all three services. Retired as a CWO (WO1). Before I went reg. I spent time in the artillery reserve and before that I was an army cadet, first in England then in Canada. That takes my military connection back to about 1952 or 1953. The course that I mentioned was a year long French immersion course in St Jean, Quebec and Esquimalt, BC. Actually we started in BC then moved to Quebec.
I think that there were a lot of hairy nights in Korea but as has been said, it is a rather forgotten war. Maybe calling it a police action has given the younger people the idea that it wasn't a "real" war.
Yup! Old fart, 74 next month. You haven't tried bad beer until you've tried the Egyptian Stella. Doesn't taste bad but too many things floating in it.[/QUOTE Fellow old feller ... are you discribing the Egyptian beer as a ...Seirra ..Hotel.....India...Tango ....beer.....do they make it from Suez water ?...my lame attempt at a joke.....As you were in the RCAF you would have been in contact with those beaut DHC made aircraft....Chipmonk...Carabou..Buffelo and the Tigermoth that looks funny with the winter canopy ....Stearman as well I imagine as you are just over the way from the USA......always had an interest in aircraft.....my favorite being the old C47/Dc3......regards TomB
