For those who may be interested, one of the blogs I follow, 48th Volunteer Infantry/Civil War Musings, has named the following their favorite books of the year:
Firebrand of Liberty: The Story of Two Black Regiments that Changed the Course of the Civil War.
One Continuous Fight: The Retreat from Gettysburg and the Pursuit of Lee's Army in Northern Virginia, July 4 - 14, 1863.
Major General Robert Rodes of the Army of Northern Virginia
Cavalryman of the Lost Cause: A Biography of J.E.B. Stuart
This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War. This book was just named as one of the five best non-fiction books of 2008 by the New York Times.
Lincoln President-Elect: Abraham Lincoln and the Great Secession Winter, 1860-1861. The newest book from one of the deans of Lincoln studies.
Lincoln and His Admirals.
General Lee's Army: From Victory to Defeat. I've read parts of this and it's very good. Recommended.
A Gallant Little Army: The Mexico City Campaign.
The Purpose of the Past: Reflections on the Use of History.
