This is a drawing (meant to be humorous) from a letter sent to a Union Navy officer upon his discharge from the Navy in 1865 by his civilian brother. Can anyone tell me if a physical exam was part of the process or did the sailor's brother invent this for the drawing? I do know that such exams by the ship's surgeon were carried out during enlistment. This is part of my current research project for a book I am working on.
