The following article in the Disunion series about headstones in Civil War cemeteries seems apropos on Memorial Day and our Statues and Monuments thread. It is entitled The Union Dead but I'm sure could be applicable to all who fell in the Civil War.

The Federal troops in this area have this kind of marker whether in the Federal cemetery or private graves but the southern dead are still in the burial trenches not individual graves, they were never exhumed. Even the ones in regular church graveyards do not have the Federal standard headstone. I have seen some that have the bronze veteran foot markers which came about later but not this kind. We are about to get a new Veteran's cemetery for our area of the state not sure if they will use the standard headstone or not. I hope they do.
