I just rented and watched Cold Mountain again, for maybe the third time. This is a great show and a must see, not only for ACW buffs, but for all. It's a romantic love story set in the graphic brutal era of the Civil War and the demise of the South. Rene Zellwigger aced her role as Ruby. My sister bought me the book when it came out and it's a great read too.

"Cold Mountain" tells the story of a wounded Confederate soldier named Inman who struggles on a perilous journey to get back home to Cold Mountain, N.C. as well as to Ada, the woman he left behind before going off to fight in the Civil War. Along the way, he meets a long line of interesting and colorful characters, while back at home, Ada is learning the ropes of managing her deceased father's farm with Ruby, a scrappy drifter who assists and teaches Ada along the way.

Good call, this is a nice movie.

Rod.

I liked the book and I'm having better feelings in retrospect to the movie. The Petersburg Mine scene was effective.

That scene was; unfortunately I didn't get too far beyond that, which is unusual for me with a movie.

Never quite bought Nicolle in this show, otherwise it was an entertaining story. -- lancer

Rene Zellwiger's charecter was more interseting than Nicole Kidman's.

I wouldn't jump feet/arse first into a battle as the Indian character at the Crater fight. Must be me.

Yea, that scene was kind of lame....and his surviving it was a littler lamer yet.

My only real knock on the movie was that in the hill country of North Carolina, there was a strong sentiment for the Union. North Carolina was the last state to leave the Union and Confederate feelings weren't very strong. (Jefferson Davis avoided North Carolina in flight from Richmond.) The western part of the state raised 4 regiments of infantry for the Union cause.
I think that if Kidman's character was having problems with a Confederate government official, she would have had help in that area of the state.

This is one of my favorite movies. It really shows that war is not a garden party and that no one wins in the end...One thing I really like in that mp is that besides the well written story and the main characters (Nicole's and Jude's) the supporting roles are rich and very well cast. Too bad that Anthony Minghella (its director) died so young...I also love another of his movies: The English Patient (the actions takes place during WWII)

Perhaps my problem with the movie was with the director; I didn't much care for the English patient either. Of course movies are in the eye.

Is it supposed to be an analogy for The Odyssey with Inamn representing Ulysses and Ada Penelope?

I would not go that far in terms of analogy. It's just a simple love story of 2 individuals who are falling for each other and are taken apart by the Civil War...Of course there is more than that which is why you have to see the movie...:)

I don't think so........but I do see the similarities in the burdens of his travels to reach his loved one.

I got the Odessey theme reading the book. Hey, it's a pretty good theme.

The similarities do seem to be there. My daughter-in-law and I thought the same thing as you. -- lancer

Nicole's problem was with the Home Guard, which were recruited usually from the leftovers ( dregs of society ), after the real fighting men went to the front. Michael

Like she said Michael, "When this war is over, there will be a day of reckoning".:D
